The 40 GB hard drive on my laptop died recently and
I replaced it with another 40 GB IDE. Windows XP
installation went well but now the usb ports no longe
see flash drives.
I was able to use a usb wireless mouse as long as I
install it before boot. But no go for memory. If I move the
usb mouse once XP is running it goes deal.
I tried downloading all drivers suggested by Gateway
for my serial number but I see no USB driver.
The DEVICE MANAGER shows no problems with the
USB Hubs or controllers.
What can I do?

This does happen quite often in some old models and Windows OS - XP in particular. I had to re-touch the soldering spots on my USB ports at one time.
