keyboard detection problem : Acer 7535

I have an acer aspire 7535, bought about a year ago.

Suddenly Windows can't detect the keyboard (or touchpad, or SF card reader). [It's Vista 64-bit windows.]

I'm pretty sure that this is a software problem, because I can use the function keys when I boot up. And the keyboard still works just fine in Linux. (But not in Windows safe mode.)

As far as I can tell, the drivers are still there. But in the windows device manager, there is no line for "keyboard". [So it's not giving me any message about keyboard problems ; it's just that there's no line between "imaging device" and "mice and pointing devices" in the device manager.]

Anybody have a guess at what's going wrong?

Thanks a lot.

Try running a virus scan first. If it does not work, may be considering a system retore.

Thanks.

I just ran a virus scan, and avast reported that there were no infected files.

I'm holding system restore as a last resort. It would erase all the software I've installed. (And I'm a little worried that it might erase my linux partitions too.)

Its also quite possible, that there may be a build up of crud below the keyboard...you might want to check the stickies on the main page and see if there is a model similar to yours/or your model in the (Service Manuals) http://tim.id.au/laptops/acer/
Remove keyboard, clean/blow out with canned air and reassemble...also try an external keyboard to see if that functions

Tried a USB keyboard? Also check in windows device manager to see if a driver has been knocked out....

There's no "keyboard" entry in the device manager..(and no entry for the touchpad under "mice and other pointing devices".

But trying to see if a usb keyboard would work seems like a good idea.

Try the USB external, and then try re-seating (and cleaning) the keyboard and also reset the CMOS battery.

Thanks! It does work with an external (USB) keyboard.

[Removing the battery had no effect, though.]

I'm still thinking it's a windows software problem, since Linux still works fine with the built-in keyboard.

And maybe the hassle of having to use an external usb keyboard is less than the hassle of trying a windows restore (which might not even work).

Can you back up your Linux partition and perform a restore or a re-installation of Windows? How about a system repair? Booting up form Windows Installation disk and go from there.

cheers ...
