Screen and Battery Problems

Here's my computer:
HP TX2525nr with Windows 7 Home installed (the only major change from stock hardware/software)
BTW I just put a fresh install of Win7 on my laptop because it had been blue screening randomly with a generic problem that could've been almost anything.

First problem is that every once in a while the screen will just completely get garbled (best way to describe it, maybe like a tv screen but without the rainbow of colors). No way to recreate it, I can't figure out what's causing it. I've googled it a little and believe I might need to open it up and check the monitors connections.

Second problem, and this has started up more recently, since before the fresh install...Randomly I will try to turn on my laptop with the little power slider on the front and it'll start to boot up and then shut off. Then I try again and it does the same. I pop the battery out and in and the light meaning dead battery flashes. I take the battery out and hold the power slider for ~20+ seconds (too impatient to wait 30) and it fixes it and will come on (because the battery is in fact not dead). Perhaps need to clean the connections? Actually a battery problem?

Ideas? Other than that it's a great laptop even though it's two years old and I don't want to get rid of it and foot the bill for another laptop. Willing to get a new battery if it comes to it though, as the battery holds charge fine but this particular laptop doesn't get great battery life, so I'd probably upgrade to an 8 cell. (9? i dont remember) Thank you so much in advance for your help!

1) Screen: next time when it garbles up, you might want to plug in an external and see what happens.

2) Does sound like a failing battery. 2 years is a long time for a battery

cheers ...
