AKA Ubuntu 10.10 LTS... Once again with ubuntu - DO NOT do a distribution upgrade. IT WILL hose your system and is so SLLLllllloooooooWWWW... Best thing to do is backup your data after you have downloaded the CD to another drive... If you have more than one drive in your system, remove the data one unless you are running RAID...

Then do a clean fresh install... It resolves a whole host of issues, such as the slow download which caused 1 of my setups to crash.. It could be down to 'popularity', but it was slow even by my standards..

Also, I have found it impossible to run an update from CD. It just plainly wouldn't let me...

Overall, not a good start.. From the RC1 it looks good

To recap....

1) BACKUP, backup and backup your data inc your FF favourites
2) Remove any uneeded hard drives
3) Install cleanly from the CD you burnt earlier - (or USB stick)
4) Ensure your PSU is plugged in, ensure you are connected to the internet and DO NOT tick the auto update box or the box about 3rd party updates..
5)BEFORE 4 use the Live CD part and install from there, do not do a straight install, for whatever reason I had a crash on that part...

Apologies about the rant, but still on going with the thing...

And most of all enjoy...

Footnote...

If you have installed in windows using the wubi.exe, uninstall it completely and install a clean fresh wubi install.. If you don't, wave windows tata too....

Thanks for the head up Mr T. We are thinking about going for this one tomorrow (on one machine ) at the office.

So does it have Multi Touch support as advertised?

cheers ...

Unfortunately I have not tested it on a touch screen yet.. HP tablet waiting, but that is set for pen only...

Issues so far... Firefox is dreadfully slow... Installed an add-on that worked perfectly before called FasterFox and that kill the Fox totally dead, icons but no action.. Switched to Opera, lovely quick browser - slow...... (Now I know it is 100% not my system).. Now on Chrome, thats more like it, just a bit of getting used too... So, I removed FF and that killed my Avant Window Navigator - caused it to crash all the time, so I have now reinstalled FF...

Overall so far Ubuntu 10.10 has a lovely feel too it.. Apart from browser issues it seems to run smoothly, picked everything up as usual.. Nice themes...

Latest Virtualbox went in a treat (3.2)..

Upgraded with two updates already..

Hosed my vista boot sector again, so just recovered that and had to reactivate (go b*****ks M$) using the phone....

So overall a mixed experience so far, however as its free, ahem FREE, I am not going to complain and can live with some of the bugs... BTW, this is the 64bit version... I have the beta netbook remix on two netbooks, so that is the next port of call...

One of the reasons I run Gentoo is how it updates. I'm running the same installation I started when I purchased this laptop over 5 years ago. The only time I've had to back-up my data (other than weekly back ups) is when I upgraded my harddrive a few years ago.

Since Gentoo is a "rolling" distro there is no "version" of Gentoo. The current version is whatever I'm running at that moment. New updates continually come into the repo so the system stays fresh and up to date. It's not instantaneous like installing binaries, but I don't have to worry about data loss either.

Regardless of which distro you use, just keep using Linux.

Ciao
