About to take it apart

Thread Starter
I'm a new guy here and when the next week or two i plan on taking my DV5 1235DX apart to clean it out. the thing is one and a half years old and i have not done it before as I don't know much about laptops. before I open to clean it I would like to know a few things first

ive read on other sites to take rubbing alcohol on a towel to the whole mother board to clean all the nasties off it. is this advised or will compressed air do the trick?

im planning on cleaning the CPU off and putting some new paste on it. with my xbox i have used rubbing alcohol to clean it and then applied Arctic Silver 5 to the chip. will this work for the CPU in my laptop? is there anything else that i should put AS5 onto?

I've seen these copper shims on ebay(linky) and was wondering if they would work on my computer to help keep it cooler and if so what size should i get?

Is there anything i else i can internally do to get this thing to say cooler cuz i tend to let it sit for days on end downloading stuff? also is there anything else yall would advise me to do while im in there(no pun intended)?

lastly does anyone know if a good place to get new hinges for the lid and a new power input jack? mine are starting to get lose and would like to replace them.

sorry for asking some may questions I'm kinda new to this stuff...I've done a few x-clamp removes on 360s but I've never touched a laptop.

Thanks
JW

Compressed air at low intensity (and q-tips, and vacuuming) would do the job just fine

Unless the gap between the CPU and the heatsink is large, I would not bother with it.

A notebook cooler or just leave it in a well ventilated area with the bottom a bit elevated should work wonder

See if you can tighten them up first. If not eBay can be a good place to find these parts-

From past experience, if it ain't broken don't try and fix it... If it works fine, leave alone.. I have a 4year old laptop still running fine with a RAM and hard drive upgrade only, never cleaned out and it is not dusty... The only thing you need to clean internally is the heatsink and fan assembly, and if that is easy to get to from underneath only do that... Also I wouldn't recommend using AS on a laptop CPU.. There is so little space and loads of components round the CPU, you get any on the board and that could be it (non-conductive, but capacitive, ie can build up a charge and damage something sensitive)... The thermal pads will generally last the lifetime of the laptop which is usually around 5years , but that depends on who is using it... Even if you see dust round the air vents, removing the battery and blasting air through usually does the trick...

I agree with Mr T.
There's no need to clean out the CPU. All you have to do is clean out the fan and heatsink. My laptop was running for 2.5 years without any cleaning and not even any upgrade to anything and nothing wrong would happen. But when it hit the 3rd year without taking a shower it started getting all grumpy and would shutdown after every 5 minutes if I have my laptop on the ground flat on any kind of surface.

That time I didn't know what was going on. I had problems with my gaming my FPS would be like 10-30 and be very choppy. Although my GPU is GMA 950 which sucks the games I play, Cross Fire, Warrock, Counter-Strike Source and Combat Arms work with my GPU. I researched about 3 months to find out why my FPS is so choppy and laggy. I looked at the game compatibility list for my GMA 950 and it showed all those games without any modifications should run perfectly. I'm like then it should be my internet connection because I thought probably my internet was weak and the internet connection couldn't send packets to match my FPS. People were like "dude you're stupid".

Then I switched my Bell Internet to Rogers and back like around 3-4 times and my FPS would still be choppy. I'm like what the hell!? That took another 3 months for me to configure. Then during those 6 months I was running GMA booster, Game Booster, Game Accelerator, Tuneup Utilities etc to boost my FPS. Nothing would change. I would also change my theme to classic and still nothing would change. Then finally on a forum website I also told them that my fan was pretty loud and make loud noises. Then they're like it's your fan that's working too hard.

I started to open my laptop and guess what....I COULDN'T OPEN IT! It took me another month to figure out how to open my laptop and clean out my fan. I accidentally broke one of my screw's heads. I had to spend another $20+ for me to fix that. Then I finally got it open by watching a YouTube video of how to open a Compaq Presario C500 laptop. Once I finally opened up my laptop, I saw the dust. It was clogged into my fan petals. I'm like, "how did the fan even manage to spin?". Then I cleaned out the heat sink and the fan and the next day...
60+ FPS on all my games!!

Well being the typical hypocrite, I turned my said 'perfect' 4 year old laptop on the other day, to get hit by a virus, immediately I connected to the web... Then while removing it, found the fan spinning like a maniac... Opened it up and stripped it out... ALL and I mean ALL of the heatsink compound between CPU and heatsink had gone... Replaced it and it worked like a champ... No dust in it at all though....

cheers ...

Probably your laptop is newer (I don't know how) because my laptop has a single circular vent. That's where the fan sucks in the air. Mr_T, did your laptop have more than one vent?
Because my laptop's fan sucks in the air and that's how I got my dust.
