NP 2092 Heatsink pads

Hi, I took apart my np2092 in order to do the oven trick on my video card.

My question is about the pads attached to the heatsink (distinct from the thermal paste) is the purpose of the pads conduction or insulation. I.e. should I remove them and replace them with artic silver?

Pad + thermal paste = big gap from the start, so I would recommend using some copper sheet + thermal paste, if the gap is big.
