Putting an SSD in my M6500 - anything I should change in the BIOS?

The heading says it all. I'm stealing the 128 gig SSD from my wife's new Latitude 6410 (she won't mind - she's used to an Asus Eee so this i7 monster is a gigantic step up no matter what's in the drive bay), and I'm wondering if there's anything in the BIOS or otherwise that I should change when I put it in my Precision. Or on the Latitude, for that matter.

just make sure the SATA is set for AHCI mode.

OK, thanks! That's for the SSD, right? Should the E6410 be set to another mode when I remove the SSD from that, or can that be AHCI mode as well?

Yes, that's for the SSD. Most SATA drives can also run in AHCI mode, but for SSDs, it's essential.

OK, thanks a lot! I will check that when I get it.

I assume RAID is also ok? Obviously I am not using the SSD in RAID as it wouldn’t support TRIM but I was lead to believe RAID supports everything that AHCI does and also gives the benefit of raid should you ever need it, without any drawbacks.

SSDs are fine with RAID. Regarding TRIM - a firmware update would solve the issue with the old SSD models.

cheers ...

That’s a relief, I almost felt a re installation coming on!! I have the latest Firmware on my OCZ so full TRIM support.

My reference about RAID was in relation to my understanding that if you used SSD’s in RAID then even if the SSD’s supported TRIM it would no longer function because of the RAID setup, of course I could be very very wrong.

Thanks.

...the new Rapid Storage Technology driver allows users of selected Intel motherboards to enjoy the benefits of RAID without losing the benefits of TRIM support.

There are caveats to the driver, of course: your operating system needs in-built TRIM support, and all drives in the array must be TRIM-compatible. You're also out of luck if you're running RAID 5, for some reason – although the home-use scenarios of RAID 0 or RAID 1 are well covered.

Now the ground has been broken by Intel, we can expect other chipset manufacturers – including rival AMD – to produce RAID-compatible TRIM drivers for their users, too.
As you can see, it takes some tweakings to be sure that your system is capable of using the advantages

Well there you go, every day is a school day….

Now how fast would it be with 2 SSD’s in Raid!!! Mmmm… no better not go there!!!

Quite fast and quiet according to many members here at NBF. I personally have not upgraded to SSDs myself (too lazy and no $ to spare ) but will consider them when I replace my old systems.

cheers ...
