My M1710 finally died. :-(

It is a sad day.... but my video card completely out of the blue today died--bsod, and then the corrupt lines.

Ironically, I haven't been playing games on it for a while (my g/f has been using it for web development) and just this past weekend started playing games on my macbook pro.. maybe it decided to commit suicide after it found it wasn't the gaming computer any more!

Anyway, I am really glad I bought the extra warranty a while ago, but it's sad; I was afraid this day would come, but was hoping it wouldn't. :-/
I will miss the beast; I assume there's no chance of Dell having any extra 7900gtx's lying about, is there? :-P

Wish me luck dealing with their warranty dept.. (Anyone want a T7600G? :-) )

Wish you luck with a replacement IronRooster! Sure I'd take your card, for free if I could

cheers ...

Actually over 4 years; it's birthday was back in July :-)
It's been an absolutely amazing machine!

Apparently they do have some 7950gtx's lying around; I'm back in business!

Nice to hear - but my bet is that they will all be either refurbished or baked

cheers ...

nope; I spoke too soon...
Turns out despite the tech's assurances that they were the same card, the new card is a Quadro NVS 510M

That's a disappointment; I tried to play a quick game (HL2) on it and it feels a lot slower..
Guess I'll be calling Dell back again. :-P

Don't game on a laptop. Desktops are more reliable and you can easily build a good gaming desktop that better than any gaming laptop. I hardly use my laptops since their 4 year warranty expired. I game on my i7 920 460 SLI desktop.

Eh, I'm really not interested in a desktop.

I haven't owned a desktop for over 8 years & really don't see any reason to consider one now. Granted, I'm not a super-hardcore gamer; the m1710 plays pretty much everything I want.

If a new fancy game comes along that I really want to play on PC, I'll go buy a new gaming laptop and be happy playing on the couch or roof or wherever else I feel like going. :-)

That may be true, but it takes a lot more skill to properly upgrade a laptop. besides...bashing lappys on NOTEBOOKforums doesn't make much sense.

I assume u already baked your card?
There's some hope for the 3600M still. eventually I'll get around to testing it seeing that I have one.

nope, I was still under warranty; they replaced it w/ a 7900gtx, so that's probably what I'll end up with (to be fair, that's what it shipped with, but it died really early on (less than 1yr) & was replaced by a 7950gtx, so that's what I've been used to.

When did XPS tech support get transferred to not-america?
That was the most frustrating thing (that and not getting their promised call-backs. GRRRR)

I used to like Dell tech support...but this time the experience was really frustrating.

(on another note; how do you get your fans not to run at full-speed when running your t7600g at 3ghz?)

Easy, on the thread fn+z on here, I found out that if you hold FN+Shift, while typing in "1 5 3 2 4", you activate a diagnostic mode. From there you hit FN + R and you'll be brought to the fan speed / cpu throttling page in the bios diagnostics I suppose. There you can turn off bios temperature management and set fans to "00" for off, or "FF" for 5000rpm (full). It'll stay at whatever you set.

Just so you know, I found that it sometimes causes my internet to die on the wifi, but I just restart and its fine, besides I only use it for gaming and its rare when it even does that.

Possibly the only reason I want to stick with dell, cause I know so much about em now
Not sure why you like the 3 ghz, doesn't it throttle a lot for you? I find that 2.5 ghz is as high as I can go without throttling and 2.66 without overheating in general.

Cool! I haven't looked into doing much with this computer for a while :-)
I will definitely play with that!

I run mine at 2.83 ghz (though I haven't looked at the throttling since I set it up a long time ago :-) )
I've Arctic Silver'd mine and that seemed to make a pretty big difference.
I want to say that I could run mine at 3.16ghz w/o overheating, but it did throttle back when I actually put it to use.
I tried keeping the fans on not-full with i8k fan control, but they would ramp up every minute or so & drove me nuts.

mhm, using that trick you disable the bios involvement completely.
and using something called throttlestop, nowadays you dont need the bios to overclock. If you have a g in any laptop or an extreme you can use it.
I got mine up to 3.5ghz with it...briefly :P
