3 pins on DC jack of Dell 9400? replacement advice please

DC jack on 9400 is bad.

I want to connect the power solder points to new wires that lead to an external jack made of anderson connectors.

if i just made the 3 connections anew, it would work straight up?

i have 2 really lame soldering iron, that resentfully solders anything, i am thinking of soldering it with a large red hot iron nail by the cooker.

else if i can chop open the exising DC jack and solder leads onto its copper connections, would i probably kill the mainboard with the force of trying to chop it open?

please recommendations if i am up the wrong path.

Thanks!

edit - for future reference, here is some info on the dell dc jack and it is a gay jack for jockstrap lovers.

OK i think i have a solution that will work as a guide for anyone that doesnt have a 300 dollar soldering station to unfasten all the pins and put in a new DC jack...

The DC jack is surrounded by metal that is connected to all the - plugs.

all the pins save the 3 near the chips are ground, it seems, the 2 middle ones register zero resistance to the ground also, and it is the live that is faulty and doesnt make a connectionto the MB, i took measurements from the disconnected wires of the input plug to all the pins.

Solution: instead of soldering the little 3rd pin at the back of the jack body, you can simply wrap very tightly a small wire around it, very securely so it mainains a good connection.

then you solder a + pin, which is 2 flat copper ribbons next to the little pin, and the - which is the sheilding or the pins underneath.

voila.

for the moment the only issue is the 115k resistance between the little pin and the ground, i figure it is because it goes through chips in the mainboard rather than being a fault of my dodgy jack, i will dremel the top of the little pin tomorrow to isolate it from the jack and i will be able to tell you.

drill a wire sized hole into the back of the underchassis next to the DC hole and pass the 3 new wires through and make a new external plug, use lots of pvc tape to fasten it.

hope that helps anyone in the same hassles.

Very nice and informative tip. Would you happen to have some pics for us?

cheers ...

hi

sorry that was a while ago, i dont think i had a camera there at the time and i was just to absorbed in the task to think of it. you have to be really careful to wrap the middle wire in pvc tape... i think i left it bare going 1 mm near the other wires and now i wonder if it may short one day but it has held up for 3 months now and the pc is good as new...

sorry i dont have a pic, just i think the description is pretty precise for the + - monitor pins on the dc jack, if you copy them exactly you should be ok.
