Sony VAIO A17 Dothan Powered Notebook - Page 6

I found some interesting things from reading the 'user guide'. There is a 'wireless mouse' option for $60. If you click on details, it says something to the effect of a built in receiver option.

I had thought this was just a BT mouse, but apparently it is not. To initiate it, you don't go through the BT paring procedures, instead you press a button on the bottom of the laptop and on the bottom of the mouse. Distance is limited to 2 feet. This looks to be an infrared mouse, not even an RF mouse.

Moreover, it looks like the Sony BT doesn't support mouse devices, although it is reference in general in the manual (more like a reference to what BT technology can do rather than what the Sony BT is capable of). I would think if the Sony BT supports mouse, it would use that feature instead of giving you an infrared option for a IR mouse. That's a pity, as the mouse is only a two button mouse, and I'd rather use mouse from the likes of Logitech or Microsoft.

I am referring to the VAIO TYPE S model not the A

On this page:

http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTE...SU1NB&Dept=cpu

It specifically says "Bluetooth wireless mouse" in the two BTO models. But that's the only place I can find it mentioned.

Does anyone know what kind of internal wireless card is in the A series. I know its a B/G card but what brand? I am thinking of just getting a Orinoco card anyway.

I dont mean too start up the ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 conflict again but, if you customize a 17" model and click more info on the LCD display, it says "The A170 includes the ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 graphics card". This is driving me nuts.
mikedc,

I dont get the meaning of your previous statement. It is well known that the A 17inch series has a 9700. Why would that drive you nuts?
The woman that I spoke told me that it does not come with a 9700 but a 9200. I dont know she was probably refering to the 15".

Yes, that is what it says, but the user manual suggest otherwise. As I had mentioned, there is the range of 2 feet, un BT like. And the instructions don't even tell you to turn on BT via either hardware switch or software to use the included/optional Sony mouse.

GOOD NEWS !

all this talk... and no action...

so I ordered the ready to ship VAIO A today and it ships today!

problem is I have no idea what type of RAM to put in this if I order from crucial.com (they dont have this model listed)

I will test it thoroughly when I get it next week with benchies (it came preconfig with 1.7 processor and 64MB 9700 Radeon)

This should give us some idea how the VAIO S series will perform...

now for the BAD NEWS>...

I grilled the salesguy about the S series... he said the latest would be August 1 (8 weeks away)

well see how the A190 performs if it doesnt cut the mustard I wont be waiting...

yes I read your post, that's what I was responding too,....just wanted to make sure you were aware there was specific contrasting info.

In any case, the built in bluetooth will support a bluetooth mouse, even if the sony one is not BT.

Good to hear...biggest thing holding me back from ordering is knowing wheteher or not the "ready to ship" A190 model comes with bluetooth or not, so please let us know when you get it. =)
Congratulations, it's a "toy"!

Where did you order from, BTW?
ordered from sonystyle usa number

30 day return policy from day it ships

free shipping so i only have to pay for it 1 way back if i dont like it

BTW what good game tests should i run?

i only have KOTOR and online Dark Age of Camelot (which seems to take alot of texture memory... well see how well 64MB holds up)

any others I can D/L for free and test?

I've heard a lot of ppl over in the Sager forums talking about the Far Cry demo as being a good test (I wouldn't know- don't like FPS's, so I didn't DL it).

Good luck on your new Sony I went from a Sony to a Sager, but am extremely happy having done so. Looking forward to hearing how your new VAIO works out.

You do realize that's a draft of the "Quick Start" guide not the full service manual. Just because there's no access panel shown doesn't mean it's not possible to replace the HD.

Thanks, that's the first solid release date info we've heard from anyone connected to Sony. Kinda makes you wonder how soon after the S series will get an Alviso refresh.

Congrats on the order. I'm looking forward to your review and benchmarks. I second the request to test Far Cry. It should really give a good workout to the 64MB on the 9700.

ya the nc6000 had a 64mb radeon 9600 card

but clocked at 250mhz core 200 memory it was really slow

even o/c to 300/250 gave me 3dmark01 bench 8200s and 3dmark03 bench of 2100s

even at those scores games were playable but not smooth

switched to the G556 with 128mb radeon 9700 things are much better (390 core 222 mem) giving me scores of 9600s and 2700s respectively

that little difference made games much more playable even tho technically its only 20% increase in benchies the "feel" was like 100%

hopefully sony vid card comes in clocked higher than the bare minimum of 390/200... and well see how well the 64mb holds today's games textures

i dont plan on keeping this more than 1 year as the new PCI-express mobos will be too enticing, but i want something sellable on EBAY and this screen will sell!
How is the screen?

arrival date June 4 will tell you then

28% into downloading farcry demo geez 512mb

Just ordered one too! VGN-A190 with the 1.8 and the 5400 RPM 80GB drive.

I ordered it with one stick of 256 and plan to buy at least 1GB at crucial (or memoryx.com). Sony's help line says all DDR 333 notebook memory will work.... does anyone have a recommendation on what particular DDR 333 I should get?
As some of you might know I am not good about notebooks. So here is a question is it as easy to put RAM in a notebook as it is in a desktop? I think it is a very smart idea to go with the 256 and upgrade yourself. But, I am kind of scared to get my notebook and open it up, and I dont want too screw up by getting the wrong RAM. Plus you save alot ot money by doing that.
Thanks, and sorry for this noob question.
