Sony VAIO A17 Dothan Powered Notebook - Page 9

No, dont have the docking base so can't comment on what resolutions it supports, although you do have the option of the VillageTronic PC card for outputting via DVI at 1,600x1,200. That card is pretty expensive, though, I believe.

That's disappointing. I would think the Radeon should be able to output a nice picture. Is the VGA port an ATI component, or does the quality of that part depend on the notebook (or motherboard) manufacturer?
Could just be the specific flat panel I tried, I find that you can get very variable results with VGA out to flat panels, the only way to be sure of ecent image quality is with a DVI connection.

Caboose, are you going to be publishing this review somewhere? If so, where?

If anyone has a specific questions, feel free to ask, I have the unit for a few more weeks.
Could you post benchmarks? Particularly 3dmark03?

Another request Could you test out the battery life for us, as the battery life given on that review is somewhat scary. I would have thought that it being a P-M machine would insure a battery better than 70 minutes Even the huge monster by Sager (8790) gets that much battery life, and that is with a P4.
I'd rather stay anonymoose (geddit?) if that's OK. As for battery life, the 70 mins is fairly accurate when running the screen at full blast, don't forget this thing has two large lamps blazing away, but you can turn it down a notch or two and it's still brighter than most. I would estimate about 2.5 hours with the screen at a sensible setting. Will do a 3dMark test tomorrow hopefully, but it's not exactly rocket science, all the components are very well known quantities - Pentium-M 1.7 and RV360 clocked at 391MHz, I would expect a 3DMark03 score of around 3,000.

It's also possible to run a second battery I believe.

Heh, yeah I get it. No problem.

Thanks for the estimate. 2.5 from it would not be bad at all, considering that it is probably better than all other 17 inchers out there.

Any way for you to confirm that for us.

Sorry if this might be bothersome, but you are the first one to have an actual unit for review, on these forums.

Thanks

Great!
If you can do some benchmarks, I'd like to know 3DMark01 - 3DMArk03 - Aquamark03 and PCMark04.
It would be fantastic.
If you can, obviously.

Thanks a lot!

Considering I could get 2:20 out of my P4 zd7000 with 17" Brightview, 2.5 hours is not impressive at all for the Sony.

Wow. To tell you guys the truth, I was expecting something like 3-4 hours. Flashram, you were getting 2:20 with that notebook using what settings?

Wifi on, brightness about medium. Powermizer set to max battery life.
That is definetely some pretty good battery life, for a P4 17 inch notebook. Why was it that you returned it again?

Need to get something more portable. I missed the mobility that I had with my x1000. So, back to searching for something that fits my needs. Too bad it doesn't exist right now.

The zd700 was definitely a nice notebook- 12,440 in 3dmark01, good battery life for it's size, awesome 1680x1050 Brightview display. Ended up selling it on Ebay for more than I paid.

Interesting thought. I was wondering if this would be true with the A190. Anyone know if the CPU is permanently attached to the motherboard?

Thanks Caboose. That is pretty much what all other notebooks in its range get.

It Still looks like a nice notebook, but I was never entirely looking into buying that model, as I prefer the S model's smaller size.

Thanks for benching it though

FEDX delayed my shipment of A190 should arrive today

Im going to start a new thread since this is getting rather large... it will have game performance

Im glad about what caboosmoose wrote on the 9700 radeon not being able to utilize more than 64MB properly

I have both a 128MB radeon 9700 and will have the sony with 64MB radeon

Ill make sure both are clocked same speed and test games... however I do not have a FPS checker and I need one that works with DEMOS GAMES not full versions

TIA

I saw the A190 at CompUSA this morning.
The display is stunning, I thought there was a sheet of glass over the display but there wasn't, I guess thats the refective surface of the Xbrite display.
What was cool was when I told the salesman that the wuxga display was too high a reolution for my eyes he pushed one button and it switched the reolution to 1280x768 and it was still as sharp and clear as before, not fuzzy like most LCD's when not using its native resolution.
I'm a little disappointed in its keyboard, Sony could have done better than the black plastic block keyboard, and it's missing cool touches like the Apple Powerbook backlit keys.
And no built in bluetooth what's with that?

Does anyone know if the 80gb hard drive in the Sony A190 is a 4200 or 5400rpm drive?
