What was cool was when I told the salesman that the wuxga display was too high a reolution for my eyes he pushed one button and it switched the reolution to 1280x768 and it was still as sharp and clear as before, not fuzzy like most LCD's when not using its native resolution.
I'm a little disappointed in its keyboard, Sony could have done better than the black plastic block keyboard, and it's missing cool touches like the Apple Powerbook backlit keys.
And no built in bluetooth what's with that?
does the xbrite display look a lot better then the 21 inch lcd's that are used for desktops

I think someone called Sony about this and they said all the drives are 4,200 RPM.

OK, ran the GPU at 445MHz on Far Cry for 30 mins or so last night with no problems at all. Scored just over 3,000 on 3DM03 with that clock rate setting.

Also can fully confirm you'll get around an hour and 10 to an hour and 20 mins battery life with screen at full blast, over two hours with it turned down - that screen really chews power at full brightness.

OH, and for those who are wondering whether Tosh will respond to the A-Series, well, all I can say is watch this space, there's something coming.

New Tosh?

Caboosemoose, which new Tosh model are you talking about?

Not at liberty to divulge, but nothing that's been announced yet (actually, I dont have many details anyway). There'll be something to take on the 17-inch A-series in the screen department and something to replace the now defunct 5200 series in the luxury desktop replacement segment.

As long as you're dropping hints...are there any signs that other major manufacturers may release something similar to the upcoming Vaio S series machines? (Close to to 4lbs with a Radeon 9700 or X600.)

Don't really have much more info than I have given, sorry.

Money aside, does anyone think the 2.0 CPU will make a significant difference over the 1.7 for Photoshop work?

The 2.0 will be shipping very soon...
....probably not for what you're gonna be paying extra. Photoshop is HD, RAM, and Video card dependent mainly, the processor stopped being the bottleneck quite a while ago.

the american S Series will have a 32MB Radeon 9200 (at least the first generation of them) - out in july for $2000
post #194 of 216
I too am disappointed with the US S series' specs. I'm hoping for a custom config with better options, but my hopes may be in vain.
Where does it say that it is only going to have the 32mb 9200

I just noticed a special offer incentive from the SonyStyle site. It's a "$200 e-coupon with any PC purchase*" includes VAIO notebooks. and the small print states "e-coupon can be used towards the purchase of any products on SonyStyle.com". The offer duration is 6/8/04-6/24/04.

Purchase any PC from SonyStyle.com**
Receive your e-coupon via e-mail. Be sure to enter a vaild e-mail address during checkout.
E-mails will be sent within 5 to 7 business days from the date of invoice.
On your next visit to SonyStyle.com, use your e-coupon to subtract up to $200 from your purchase total.
You can use the coupon on any items, but it will not retain value; the e-coupon is one time use only.

Question, does this mean you save $200 on your next purchase or on the original purchase?
Sadly, it's the next purchase.

That's the almost same spec as the Japanese standard retail model. The 9700 is a custom SonyStyle online only option in Japan.

If you read your link carefully:

The PDF is for one model, the "VGN-S150". The model doesn't equate exactly to a Japanese model, but in Japan, they have three main model numbers for the S series: VGN-S50, VGN-S70 and VGN-S90 (SonyStyle only).

For comparison, the Japanese A series models are VGN-A50, VGN-A60 and VGN-A70 vs. the US models VGN-A130, VGN-A170 and VGN-A190.

I saw a A117 in a TV/DVD/Computer shop today, it was in the window so wasnt able to get up close and personal with it but it definatly caught my attention to say the least. saw some lower end Vaios that were actuly switched on and running in the shop. Those Oynx screens are seriously niced indeed.

The computer guy in the shop said that there would be a 128MB VRAM version in around 2 weeks time, and that it would cost around £2,200.. which may be just over my budget but i may very well stretch to that if it is indeed around that price and available in a few weeks time as this machine looks to be as close as im gonna get to an ideal high end lappy if i dont go the desktop/budget laptop route.
