Sony VAIO A17 Dothan Powered Notebook - Page 2

Rumors are flying fast and furious now, don't count your chickens before they hatch, etcetera, etcetera...This info is from Yago's Forum TT-Hardware (in French):

It looks like the lower spec 15" machines will only offer Banias 1.5GHz or 1.6GHz with a 64MB Radeon 9200 and XGA screens (4:3 not widescreen), while the higher end 17" has Dothan 1.7GHz or 1.8GHz, the WUXGA screen and 64MB Radeon 9700.

It looks like the 2.0GHz Dothan model and 128MB Radeon may be questionable, unless those PDFs are out of date. Also, there's no sign of any 13.3" model, so that translation may have been a mistake.

Good news is that it looks like both screens are Xbrite ("X-black" in Europe...go figure?).

If that notebook weren't so expensive I'd so not order the M 5:6 from powernotebooks.com right now.

That is truly an amazing notebook from Sony, if I could get that in 15.4", 1.7+ dothan, 1 GB ram, 128 MB Radeon 9700...for something comparable to powernotebooks.com I would do it in less than a second. But we all know that there is no way in hell I can get what I want for about 2000-2100 there. I might get the basic starting model from them for that *sigh*, ah well hopefully there will be nothing wrong with my M 5:6 from powernotebooks.com when I order it.

axeman it's a great laptop for the money. lets us know if you get one without backlight issue. Maybe they finally fixed that problem

The A117 is great but the 15" is model is just crap

I mean was it so difficult to put a 15.4" WXSGA with an ATI9700 to match its bigger brother ???

I'll never understand Sony politics.

Anyway, the strange thing is that the first official thing we get on these laptops is from Sony France. They usually get the Vaio very late compared to Japan or the USA. Consider that they still have the TR2 while the TR3 has been on sale for months in Japan.

So this makes me think that there will be more interesting Japanese models and that there is definitely a very good chance to see a 13.3" model as France is not a good market for small screen laptops they may have scrapped it from their import list.

So what you're saying is they're only going to put the Dothan in these giant 17" laptops? BS!

9700 with 64MB on the TOP model???? 9200 for the others??????? AS USUAL, SONY really lacks onto the graphic side of their systems.

They posted 128MB above also. Who knows. Wait for an official U.S. announcement.

I was playing around with the "Tune Simulation" customizing options to find the lowest price for a stripped down 13.3" model with the 9700:

Pentium M 1.5GHz
256 MB RAM (throw in some cheap Crucial)
Radeon 9700 64MB
40GB HD
DVD-ROM/CD-RW
basic warranty

$1,914.87 (215,040 Yen)

Sold!

Damn the 17" would be nice if it had a 128 or 256meg card in it, WTF SONY??? You think they would at least make it an option for the gamers out there.
Wow.. such a small notebook with the 9700.

If only they were available in the US already.
