I popped in the Sony store in midtown Manhattan, and I too saw the A170 today! It's such an amazing sight to daze into the large xbrite LCD screen. I just have to say: Wow!!

But it not for me, at least not yet. I'm holding out for the S Series. I hope I won't be disappointed, ie lacking the 9700 option.

You guys are too emotional. Every tidbit of news is the end of the world.

Nothing's a done deal until the S is live on SonyStyle.

I hear you. I already had a disappointment with the latest release of the Powermacs. I have high hopes with the type S.

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum, but maybe I can add some info for you.
I received my VGN-A117S last week. Since I'm living in germany I ordered in Germany.

per default it has:

1,7 GHz CPU, 80GB HDD, 512 MB RAM (PC2700 from Infineon), ATI Radeon 9700 with 64 MB-RAM. Bluetooth, wireless (802.11 b/g), firewire (4 pin), 1 pcmcia slot, memory stick slot. 3 USB (2.0) VGA out(analog), av out, LAN (1 GBit), DVD +- burner.

Overall impression is very good. The quality is high, the display is so good I never saw something like that.

The system runs fine with 2 GByte RAM PC2700 (Kingston, or swissbit) eveb though Sony say 1 GB max. But I would never buy it again with this slow 80 GB drive. I'M currently looking on how to change it. There is nothing in documentation like it is on how to change the memory.

I installed WIndows XP Pro on the machine and I must say that the performance is really great.

Hope I could help a little bit!

5400rpm 80gb drive is not slow, it is as good as 7200 lower capacity drive. Sony says 2gb max in PDF documentation and custom build option.
Hi,

that is not correct. The harddrive is 4200 rpm (http://www.baber.com/drives/internal...b_laptophd.htm), and believe me it is slow. The 60GB with 7200 is way faster.
I don't no the documentation you are talking abaout but on the web pages and in the documentation included with the laptop they say 1 GB max.
Anyway I just wanted everybody to know that 2 GB are no problem.

They have changed their 80gb drive options, before it was only available in 5,400rpm, now it is available in 4200 and 5400 variety. As indicated in their options and literature for USA customers under the sonystyle.com USA website, you can also opt for the 2gb ram option by adding $1,900.

Sony USA has documentation on how to install more ram. I believe I have linked the URL in my earlier post on this thread. You have 1 slot on the bottom of the laptop, and one under the keyboard (which require the removal of 2 screws on the bottom to release the keyboard).

@exe $1900, holy s.... . I payed 500 euros for 2 GByte in germany (PC2700), they must be crazy.

@exe thanks for pointing out how to change the memory, I knew that, since I bought the 2 GByte myself and changed the installed 2 * 256 MB.

I'm looking for an instruction on how to change the hdd.

Can someone with an A190 check to see if the hard drive and processor are upgradeable? Thanks!

None of them are. At least not easily, and it'll void your warranty no matter what.

I've seen the A190 several times now, the best place I've seen it in was MicroCenter as at least there it's not locked into a contraption to prevent theft which also limits trying it out. At one CompUSA I went to not only is it in one of these contraptions it even has a plastic box over the display!
Anyway after using it for about a half hour at MicroCenter I think it's pretty nice, for me at least the 1900 x 1200 resolution is too small, there is a button on top that when pushed changes the resolution to 1280 x 768 and is pretty sharp for not being at its native resolution. The reflective covering on the display I think could be a problem in certain lighting conditions, perhaps someone with an A190 can tell me if I'm wrong. The keyboard is very nice and feels good with no flexing at all. The two small mouse pad buttons are uncomfortable to me though, they are very narrow.
All in all it's a nice design, for someone whos eyes are good enough for the WUXGA resolution I think you would be pretty happy with it.
