But, seriously...

There may be a downside to the 13.3" S series: Tom on LeoG has pointed out that it has a 1.8" 4,200RPM hard drive like the TR series (which has always been a disadvantage compared to the Fujitsu P5K). That will put a serious hit on performance and limit capacity. It might also be tougher to upgrade yourself (I've heard you can't upgrade the TR drive...not sure if that's true).

I'm trying to find confirmation about this drive on the Sony site, but Tom usually knows what he's talking about.

I love the 13.3 inch. Choices, decisions are all coupled by more choices! I have to give sony the thumbs up for going outside the box. Everyone wants to couple smaller machines with lower specs.

When the hell is sony going to announce this crap in the US of A?

Thanks to jswriter for the tip:

Sony VAIO A series on cnet

Quote:
Today, Sony announced a new line of VAIO desktop-replacement laptops with a huge, 17-inch, wide-aspect screen--the biggest on any Sony notebook. In fact, it's one of the biggest screens on any portable. The VAIO A series will eventually replace Sony's popular VAIO GRT series, and it switches from the Intel Mobile Pentium 4 to the much more battery-friendly, revamped Pentium M (a.k.a. Dothan). The VAIO A series will come in several product lines and top out at $2,800.

The top-of-the-line VAIO A series model and the $2,300 midline version will have the aforementioned 17-inch (diagonal) screen, displaying a celestial 2.3 million pixels in 1,920x1,200 wide-screen format. All the VAIO A-series models will include a port replicator that has an embedded television tuner. Between the tuner, the 80GB hard drive, and Sony's Giga Pocket solution, you'll be able to digitize and record TV shows from your laptop--no TiVo required--or convert VHS tape to DVD.

VAIO A series notebooks will be available at retail and online at www.sonystyle.com in a variety of configurations. In addition to the VGN-A190 model that will sell for about $2,800, the VGN-A160 model with a 15.4-inch wide format display will be available for $2,300 including the AV dock. For business users, the VGN-A130 model will be sold through business-to-business channels and online at sonystyle.com. It has a 15-inch 4x3 aspect display and will be available with an optional business dock.
Still no word on the if/when of the Type S line.

Good news. Here's a hint about the 13" coming to the US:

New Sony VAIO PCs

Quote:
Mike Abary, general manager of VAIO product marketing in the U.S., also provided a sneak peek at a couple of concept products that represent what may be available in the near future. These included an ultra-portable, 13-inch widescreen notebook PC and a hard disk-based music player announced already in Japan.

A Japanese review of the low-spec base model Type S is up. It has more pics and a few benchmarks against other Japanese models, such as the NEC LaVie N LN500/9D.

VAIO type S Review

For everyone who was wondering, the 40GB drive in this unit is the 2.5" (9.5mm high) Hitachi DK23FA-40 4,200RPM with 2MB cache.

40GB Hitachi DK23FA-40
IBM (Hitachi) Travelstar 4K80 (DK23FA) Series DK23FA-40

The specs say the standard 6 cell battery (11.1V and 4,800mAh) should last up to 5.5 hours and the larger optional battery up to 8 hours. Their MobileMark2002 battery life rating was 296 (4 hours 56 min.).

Conclusion:

Quote:
It is compatible on a high level in portability and a performance. VGN-S70B is 2 spindle mobile note PC which realized sufficient portable weight of about 1.89kg, carrying 13.3 type wide liquid crystal and a DVD-RW drive. Since battery drive time is also long, it is recommendation also at those with many opportunities who use in the place which does not have a power supply. Moreover, since performance is also high, it is ( use / instead of Desktop PC ) suitable combining port replicator. Although a price becomes high, the person adhering to a performance is VGN-S90 PS/VGN-S90S of the Sony style limited model, and if Pentium M745 and MOBILITY RADEON 9700 are chosen, he will become the strongest mobile note PC.

On this page, but I have the feeling it may be a cut-and-paste typo. I've been playing with custom configs and there is no video option, the video just seems to depend on your initial selection.

Specifications VGN-A190

Quote:
• Graphics Card
ATI Mobility™ Radeon™ 9700

• Video RAM
64MB (up to 128MB, 32MB minimum)
I got it down to $2099, with the lowest options (except for CPU):

1.7GHz Dothan
17" WUXGA
256 MB RAM
40 HD
DVD-ROM/CD-RW
Windows XP Home

Btw, it looks like they currenty offer a free upgrade from 1 year to 3 year warranty.
