Mac OS X about to drop Java?

After the butt heading with Flash, are we seeing Apple dropping Java from its future OS version?

Java Deprecation
As of the release of Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 3, the Java runtime ported by Apple and that ships with Mac OS X is deprecated. Developers should not rely on the Apple-supplied Java runtime being present in future versions of Mac OS X.

The Java runtime shipping in Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, and Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, will continue to be supported and maintained through the standard support cycles of those products.

Or am I interpreting it wrong?

Its hardly surprising, I bet the licences are going up in price, plus Java is a good springboard for exploits and malware....

Indeed, though, Java is a universal platform.

@MrT-

Not really on all counts

The short version of this is that while OS X will no longer ship with a version of Java, it will likely be available through Oracle. Java is really representative of a competitor platform to them now seeing as how it is the language of choice for Android, despite the legal battles surrounding that at the moment.

Boonana Trojan Horse Discovered
October 26, 10

SecureMac has discovered a new trojan horse in the wild that affects Mac OS X, including Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6), the latest version of OS X. The trojan horse, trojan.osx.boonana.a, is spreading through social networking sites, including Facebook, disguised as a video. The trojan is currently appearing as a link in messages on social networking sites with the subject “Is this you in this video?”

When a user clicks the infected link, the trojan initially runs as a Java applet, which downloads other files to the computer, including an installer, which launches automatically. When run, the installer modifies system files to bypass the need for passwords, allowing outside access to all files on the system. Additionally, the trojan sets itself to run invisibly in the background at startup, and periodically checks in with command and control servers to report information on the infected system. While running, the trojan horse hijacks user accounts to spread itself further via spam messages. Users have reported the trojan is spreading through e-mail as well as social media sites.

The java component of the trojan horse is cross-platform, and includes other files that affect Mac OS X as well as Microsoft Windows. There have been reports of similar behavior in recent trojan horses targeting Microsoft Windows, but they have not included cross-platform capabilities until now. The trojan attempts to hide its internet communications and actions through obfuscated code spread through multiple files, and will attempt to contact additional command servers if the primary servers are unavailable.

This trojan horse is currently in the wild affecting users of both operating systems.

Following its partnership with Valve, Apple already reworks its GPU driver. Based on the latest laboratory tests so far, gaming on Apple machines will be just as rewarding as gaming on Windows based machines

That's why I bit the bullet and bought a copy of Win7. Best of both worlds.

Well, well, well ...

"We're delighted to be working with Oracle to insure that there continues to be a great version of Java on the Mac," said Bertrand Serlet, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering. "The best way for our users to always have the most up to date and secure version of Java will be to get it directly from Oracle."

Duped OpenJDK, and Apple will make its Java technology available in open source form to developers.

Apple has released updates to Java for Mac OS X for both 10.5 Leopard and 10.6 Snow Leopard. The updates are related to security and can be found in the software update application.
