HElp Laptop Melting itself

hello I'm completely lost.

I have a E6500 which the power button no longer does anything. when i plug in the AC adapter no lights come on the computer. The CPU gets extremely hot and there is a hissing from near the DVD drive. I took the bottom panel off to see if anything looked weird and I could hear the hissing coming from the bottom near the DVD drive connection.

the computer was working last week. The LCD was broken but it works fine with an external display. I just got the replacement LCD today and installed it and now the computer does not function at all and tries to melt itself down.

Anyone know why its doing what its doing?

Did you remove any heatsink when installing the new screen? If a heatsink is not installed properly and isn't fully making contact with the CPU or video card, the CPU or video card can overheat.

hi Djembe,

I did not remove the heat sink to anything I did not dissasemble anything in the laptop case. I only removed the bezel to the LCD screen, removed the screen. tried to boot up with no screen (just external Monitor) and it didnt boot. So i figured i need to have a LCD attached for it to boot up. Well the new LCD is installed and it does not boot up. Does not even register the battery or AC adapter is installed. I had to remove the ac adapter b/c the CPU starts burning up. even though the laptop doesn't show its getting power.

I have no clue

If it worked (no melting) before than it should work afterward - we pray and hope

I would take the notebook apart and going through the cable connections again. Could it be that the replacement LCD was causing this?

There is only one cable to connects the LCD to the laptop. Not other cables or anything on the motherboard were touch.

Anyone know what is happening?
1. Computer does not power on. It's completely dead.
2. CPU starts burning hot when ac adapter is plugged in.
3. Hissing noise from the Motherboard.

What could cause these symptoms?

It's a brick right now. Well it's a leg warmer.

Do laptops have psu's like desktops?

Anyone have a diagram of what is where on the motherboard so I can know what component is making the hissing noise.

Thanks

I think the problem maybe in the Power Supply circuit on the motherboard.

It could also be the new LCD caused a problem

Have you tried removing it along with the inverter ?

The CPU should not be doing anything until the laptop is turned on

but more isolating is required

Try opening up the laptop and see if you can locate the area where the noise is comming from.

To help troubleshoot the problem remove the CPU and see if the laptop stops making the noise when the AC is connected

For schematic you can try this site, thanks to one of our members here. Just go down to the page and type in your model and hopefully it will come up.

Thanks for the link. Looks like there are a bunch of nice dls there. Unfortunatly the 6500 search yielded no hits. But I'll try to search google for some schematics now that I now that type of thing exists.

Dave,

When I take off the LCD the computer is still dead and the CPU still heats up when the ac adapter is connected. It's still a brick.

I am baffled that plugging in the power adapter in itself causes the CPU to start getting really hot. There must be some kind of electrical problem. However if the computer is off and dead I don't know how power is getting to the CPU. Can you even think of a senario where this can physically happen? I don't know enough about how the power button works or what has to happen for the CPU to get hot while nothing else happens to the computer. I can not even come up with a hypothesis for why this is happening.

Could the computer get stuck with the "switch" in the on position so power is being drained or short circuited to the CPU alll the time and therefore even when the ac adapter is connected to the computer power is sucked away from everything and just heats up the CPU?

I was hoping I wouldn't have to get into taking things apart b/c then I can't pin point a problem to a procedure I preformed. Now if I take it apart I could screw up everything right? Hahah i guess I'll just have too.

Is there anything you could do to the monitor or cables in the bezel to make something short circuit? Maybe I did that somehow?

Just a long shot, how about trying with another power adapter?

I tested the power adapter with my multimeter and it's producing the correct voltage. I m thinking that that's ok, it is also far to convenient I that were the problem :-). I'm going to bring the computer to work tomorrow and see if I can get someone in the tech department can give me a better answer than "it's bad, replace it." I need some kind of logical explaination, the saga continues.

how can i test for short circuit?

well the noise is the thing to check closer so taking it apart is a must.

but my guess is your motherboard is probably toast

Sooo... I have this great e6500 for sale anyone need a leg warmer?

I'm going to see if I can sell it to the IT guys here at work. Maybe get 150 bucks or something. Shame I just bought a brand new LCD. Maybe I should weep on it and maybe my tears posess some kind of hardware magic that can bring her back from the dead.

Breaking it into parts and selling them on eBay ... might get some $$ back for another comp.

cheers ...
