Thinking of buying a M17 R2

Heyall,
Debating on picking up a M17 r2, I have a guy that I suppose has a connect on the inside from his business to get them...I am paying 1700 for the specs below, pretty decent deal I assume?

m17 black with 1920x1200 resolution
i7 720
500GB 7200 Hard Drive
4GB DDR3
5870 x 2
Blue Ray Drive
1 year warranty from Dell
Windows 7 Ultimate
It is in like new condition with no scratches or imperfections.

I was looking at some Asus and MSI and they are about the same but with only 1 of those 5870s, didn't know if the 460m is a better card or not?

Woot Woot

That's a good price for sure. 460M is supposed to be better, depending on whom you talk to

I meant going with a 480m in the Asus or MSI vs going with the dual 5870s in the alienware...It is a nice laptop I used it before but he has since upgraded it to 2 vid cards and is looking to unload it to buy one with a quad i7 instead of the 720.

What are the prices ( and full specs) of the MSI or ASUS in question?

The Asus and MSI either have a 5870 or a 480m, they run about 1900 to 2k, but they are new on ebay vs this one is about 4 weeks old if that but in new condition. Didn't know if it was worth getting this with a dual vid setup vs just getting a single vid setup on a newer machine.

A single 480M should (in theory) be better than the single HD5870, but still a shade below HD5870 CrossFire (x2).

It's a toss up for me, but for AW fans then it is worth to go for the CrossFire set up. You might want to check out the threads about m17x though for more personal inputs from current and previous owners.

Warranty and after sales support are other main things to consider. ASUS is up on the support side at the moment.

There is a rumor that the R3 is comming out in December / January

but it may ony have a GTX460 (not sure about SLI) and the new 68xx ATI cards

I hope to see USB 3.0 with the R3 as well

We got another rumor about the latest AMD HD6970 here. It will be fun to see it coming to notebooks.

Ok here is my debate currently.

I can get the Alienware, the price is 1700, plus about 100 for shipping so 1800,

Or I can get a Asus with same specs, but only 1 x 5870 for about 1600 shipped...

Is that extra video card really that much of a difference?

In my personal opinion - NO.

the second GPU adds abnout 50% more video processing power to the computer.

There are some issues with SLi and Crossfire - mostly to do with drivers,

IMO I would get the Alienware over the Asus, and if you can afford it get the crossfire option
