Vid card or LCD?

I am hoping someone can give me a definitive direction here. While using my computer a while ago, I got a bunch of artifacts on the screen and then it went dead. The computer still works, just nothing on the screen.

I am not sure if this is the video card or the lcd. I would think that the lcd would still have some backlight to it, even if nothing is displayed, but there isn't, making me think the problem is the lcd.

But then, when I plug in the S-video cable and connect it to the television, I get nothing there either, making me think it's the video card.

Any ideas? Is there something I would have to do on the laptop to get video to display on the tv, such as select a secondary monitor (which I can't see to do)?

NP5793 with all the usual stuff, the vid card is a 8800GTX.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Not sure about using the S-Video out to test if the GPU is dead or not, but you do have a DVI port, use that to connect to an external monitor instead and see if you can get some display.

Thanks for the quick reply. Unfortunately, I don't have anything with a DVI input. I will ask around though and see if any of my friends do. Hmm... or maybe a DVI to HDMI cable? Not sure if they make those, but another idea.

Thanks.

They do have DVI to HDMI adapter for less than $10

Another thing - if you are so sure that the notebook still working, then go for the inverter replacement - cheap and simple to do as well.

Inverter? Do you mean the power cord? It is functioning fine, as far as I know. The light on the brick lights up and the appropriate lights on the laptop light up showing positive charging.

The laptop powers up, you can hear windows start and I can even log on using the fingerprint sensor (you can hear the successful read sound) and then hear the windows logon sound.

It's just that there is no display. The lcd is completely dark. I was thinking that if it was the vid card just not outputting anything, the lcd would still have a backlight because of having power, just no picture. Kind of like a tv that has the cable not hooked up displays a black screen, but you can still see that it's lit up.

Inverter = LCD inverter. It's the little board at the bottom of the LCD when you remove it. And bad inverter = black screen most (if not all) of the time

Ahhh... I see. I'll check that. I'll search around for lcd removal instructions too. Thanks!

Good luck. Hope you get it sorted out, cheaply

2 things no1 else mentioned... If you look really close can you see a faint image of what should be on the screen? If so the switch that turns the backlight on and off when you close the lid might be stuck. Also have you tried hitting the FN key and whichever F key changes your display mode?
