305d-s5904 dvd-rom swap

besides having a different tray cover, are all laptop dvd drives the same size? i would like to swap out this drive with another one that is more reliable but wonder if this is possible. would i have to order one from toshiba or can i take the one out from a dead laptop and pop it in with the tray cover of this one on it.

You don't have to buy it from Toshiba but you'll need to get a drive that is compatible to your notebook model. Toshiba has a nasty habit of setting its optical drives as master from factory in order to work with its notebooks, unless you can find a firmware that would set other drives to it
