Toshiba TE2000 100% CPU Utilization

My TE2000 tends to slow down to a crawl and the task manager shows 100% utilization for long period of times.

Based on my previous experience with an ACER Laptop I thought this may be related to overheating, so I removed the cover located above the keyboard to inspect the fan....I noticed that the fan does not operate continuosly but stops and then starts and operates briefly...Is the fan operations suppossed to be continous or is it temperature controlled by the computer....?????

I also blowed compress air to remove any dust accumulation (that solved the problem mentioned before with the ACER), but it did not helped...(did not notice any dust blowed off as was the case with the ACER)

Initially, suspecting a software problem, I had tried increasing the swap file but did not help, either...I am planning to run a defrag, since the disc is fragmented, but I am not sure that fragmentation should bring the laptop to a crawl..

Again, this is very similar to what was my experience with the ACER Laptop and after trying several remedies, including restoring the whole operating system, in that instance the problem resulted to be the air flow restriction due to dust accumulation....

So, I am wondering that in this case with the Toshiba the fan intermitent operation may be the culprit.....

I dissambled the laptop to fix a problem wiht the power connector so this may be an opportunity to change the fan.

Any comments will be appreciatted....

Cleaning it up, defrag and chkdsk and making sure that you have enough disc space to spare are good. Uninstall software that you don't need, disable start-up processes and services are a start.

Some brands/models do have that nagging fan on then off then on. See if your BIOS is up to date.

That means that the fan should operate continuosly, then? I just want to know if possible before putting the machine back together, if posible.....just in case I need to order a fan in ebay...

Not necessarily. Good thermal paste, good cleaning up, BIOS up to date should do the job.

There is a remote chance that the original fan can also be poor in quality - out of the assembly line - and the replacement would help.

I confirmed that the fan is temperature controlled, as you suggested.....Put on additional thermal paste..it appears that the BIOS is the latest one, at least did not found an update on the Toshiba website....now I am having some problems with the power supply,,,apparently the cord was a little bit turn out at the connector...have to get a new one on ebay.....anyway its an old computer....but its ok for what I used it...surf the web, mainly.....

thks....

It's always fun to keep a good old notebook in running condition. But I agree with you, if it does the job then no need to bother with replacing it.

cheers ...
