Inverter question

Hello,

I replaced an inverter in a friend's md2601u. With the original inverter, the LCD backlight would not come on (not even a "flicker" as an attempt to light the CCFLs on startup). With the new inverter, the screen comes on, but flickers on all brightness levels but high. After about 5 minutes on full brightness, the inverter begins making high-pitched noise and drops out -- no backlight until the next boot. I still think i have a bummed inverter, but would like the opinions of others.

Inverter making noise? Dodgy to say the least. Sure, I would go for another inverter first and see.
