Curious what sort of memory a m17x r2 takes and how many slots it has....One I am getting has 4gb of ram I was looking on new egg found some 8 gb 2 x 4 gb 1333 memory.

Curious would this work? How many slots and what speed memory would a i7 720 use?

Thanks guys!

Should work! What you see on newegg fits the comp!

My answer can be short sometimes. The NewEgg offers fits the recommendations of your comp - 2 slots at 8GB Max. I just confirmed it.

And yes, I am one of those so called post whores on NBF

Hey alien which 8gb set are you looking at? as I am also going to be purchasing ram to upgrade my m17. So for those of you with any insight, I am thinking of going with 8gb and going with the g skill 1333 as it seems to have gooten rave reviews. But I am also eyeing the Kingston Hyper X 4gb 1866 set as well. Any tips or better suggestions would be greaty appreciated.

EDIT #1
Also thought it would be best to note that I will upgrading my cpu to a intel x9100 if that would make a difference

EDIT#2
i just used tigerdirect's and newegg's compatability selector and TD states cosairs and newegg recommends crucial. so now im all confused.

Crucial memory brand is a preferred one for many high performance enthusiasts thanks to its quality. That makes them expensive

As long as the specs are the same I personally go with the cheapest modules I can find, as long as warranty is good.

Regarding the 1866 modules I am a bit concerned about the faster speed, your machine is being recommended with the 1333.

LOl hey thanks, Im quite ignorant about this stuff and just thought higher speed ment faster ram. although I was informed this is not the case and now know the 1866 would be a waste of time.

However its funny that you mention 1333 cause I was under the imprssion that my MoBo was at 1066. as I have the pre dell Alienware M17 bought in january of 09. Maybe i misread it. Ill have to go back and look at it.

Anyways thanks for the info.

You should be able to use 1333 on your m17. Not 100% sure about 8GB upgrade though, 4GB max is what the specs call for.

yeah ive been PMing back and forth with GWguru on the matter as well. and have pretty much decided on kingston hyper x CA7 1333 4gb set. My only lingering concern is the reviews on the chip set voice a lot of concerns about heat production and failures.

You mean chipset and faster ram speed relationship producing heat?

lol sorry wrong wording i guess. I was refering to the reviews on newegg for the kingston hyper x 4gb set i was refering to in my last post. A lot of the reviews voice concern for the heat they produce.

I dont know if the reviews are refering to the chipset/ram relationship or just the ram itself. But anyways again I am sorry for the terrible wording

I see. I don't pay much attention to memory modules heat on notebooks, another story on desktops though. Everything runs hot inside a notebook case, period

If your going from 4GB to 4GB I wouldn't even bother. Save the money for a faster hard disk.

Regarding the heat, since these are 1333 (667x2) @ CL7 they will run hotter than the CL9 modules.

I would actually be going from 3gb - 4 gb. **yeah I skimmed on ram and video memory when i bought my M17 to bring it in under my spending limit at the time**

But anyways, back on topic, I know faster components will run hotter, but my question was based more toward will the excess heat be a great problem and cause crashes or failure. Again my bad porr wording on my part.

I will also be purchasing a HD. Im just deciding between dual WD Scorpio Black 500gb 7200rpm 16MB cache Sata 3 and dual Seagate Momentus XT 7200rpm 32mb cache Sata 3 hybrid. But im leaning toward the WD cause i have read some some bad reviews reguarding the firmware on the seagate and crashes.

I've used both drives and both have worked well for me. If it were up to me I'd get the Seagate. The tech behind it is something you only see in enterprise SANs.

Excessive heat can cause the memory modules to fail leading to a lot of BSOD. I've had to return Kingston memory in the past because of this. They make the RMA process painless if it occurs. In the end you won't see much of a difference if anything at all. Like Q said get something with a good warranty. Spend the extra money on a hard drive upgrade. You will see a greater difference there.

OK great thanks, placing the order for HDD and ram now
