Sony Vaio PCG-GRT786M disassembly

I have a friends old Sony Vaio laptop and all I want to do is remove the hard drive & reinstall Windows as it has become corrupted. I did this no problem with my old one, however the hard drive seems a bit tricky to get to. Everything else seems to be ok.

I've had a search on here and via google with no luck for this particular model. Any thoughts and/or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

The hard drive on this model is under the keyboard. You would need to remove the access panel (screw on the left if I am not mistaken), pop (lift) it up, release the keyboard and you will see the drive.

Be careful with the keyboard ribbon and the hard drive connector unit. Good luck.

Thank you for the reply. Dumb question but by access panel you mean? The only screws are the ones in the back of laptop

Sorry - the panel above the keyboard Sometimes there is a screw on the left side to hold it down. But if you can pop it up without removing any screws, then it is fine as well.

Right ok got the access panel off and lifted the keyboard easier than I thought, however still a bit unsure how to remove the hard drive. I don't want to risk damaging anything.

There should be 4 or 5 screws to hold the hard drive (assembly) down to the board, remove them and you should be able to lift out the drive along with its caddy. The rest is easy. Just be careful with the data connector - kinda snap on latch that connects the drive assembly to the board at the top.

No question is dumb question. No asking and screwing up is dumb

Well it should be in the middle non? Right is your optical drive , left is the fan. I think. If you load up a pic then we can be sure.

Looks like the right side is the optical drive, and the drive is on the left. It does need some cleaning up inside from the look of it.

That's what I figured best to sure. Here's the left hand side, so just undo the screws and that's it?:

Recommendations for cleaning?
Yes. Lift the cover off and you should see everything better. Need to do it to clean anyway.

Cleaning: q-tips, compressed (canned) air, vacuum cleaner at low speed

Then you still have some screws left somewhere

From the position of the hard drive, can you see if there are other screws underneath (outside the bottom casing) that could hold it in?
