CONSIDERING AN ASUS G73JH

Thread Starter
this is my first post here.
i have never owned any laptop other than a dell.
i am looking to buy a new laptop and would prefer one that allows me to casually play all the new games at decent settings.

the asus g73jh seems to fit that bill well at a very nice pricepoint compared to a lesser equipped m15x.

my question is mostly in regards to reliability and customer concerns.
newegg comments from consumers on this notebook seem to vary quite a bit and there is a lot of negative feedback

do i have reason to be concerned and move this notebook off the list?
id like to own it.. at 1400, you cant beat the specs.
but i dont want a pos that im constantly getting grey screens or having to call customer service.
(i have never had to call dell cust service in 7 years)

here are specs if needed.
asus g73jh-x1
i7 core 1.60 ghz
8g ram
500gb 7200rpm hd
ati mobility radeon hd5870
1920x1080 res 17.3" lcd

thank you for any input.

Get an extended warranty from ASUS and you'll be all set. I haven't heard much about ASUS having issues with their systems this past 2 years.

the 1 year warranty option from neweggs site is 69 dollars.
is that a warranty from asus or newegg or a third party?

ASUS normal warranty is 2 years (international). I could never understand why resellers like NewEgg can't offer that one direct to customers. Talk to them again and see. They probably claim that since you get a good price the warranty should be extra

This one year warranty option - what is it all about? Meaning you can't have support the first day you buy this without this option?

I guess id have to call/email newegg.
looks like the laptop itself comes with a year from asus

im just more concerned with the idea that customers are complaining on newegg comments because they are constantly tweaking things and thats when the problems happen or if problems happen because things were not installed/programmed properly

Which is sad but true.

First thing is always creating some recovery disks, right of the bag. Then one can just disable - not uninstall - start-up processes and services that one does not need. Then try the system out for a while before even attempting on tweaking

SO....

if i buy this notebook.
and i dont mess with anything. i just turn it on and use it, i shouldnt have any issues?
im not tweaking, im not overclocking..
the farthest i ever get in modifying is eliminating certain process (like apple or google update) at startup.

You also don't have to buy it from Newegg. For example, GenTechPC is a highly respected Asus reseller and one of the Notebook Forums official resellers. You'd get Asus' standard warranty (2 years global coverage, accidental coverage for the 1st year) by purchasing through them and Ken, their forum rep, is very knowledgeable and can help you with system questions.

2nd GenTECH

If I wanted a decent desktop replacement, I would definitely look at that one.. The 2 year warranty is good and if you look after it, there should be no problems, ie its a 17" screen, but as on any laptop, hold the centre of the screen surround to lift it, not the left or right side.. Why? If you don't this puts pressure on the left or right hinge, which leads to abnormal wear, resulting in cracked casing, bent hinges and a failing screen where the cable going from screen to motherboard comes adrift or wears out.. ALWAYS and I always stress ALWAYS, use the laptop on a flat surface so it can breath and keep airflow round it.. That is why laptops always have raised rubber feet and vents on the bottom as well as the side or back vent.. And also watch the DC socket and trailing power cable...

These go for any laptop, but especially prevalent on big screen lappies.. I would also look at a laptop cooler too 'cos they do help with airflow and cooling and will give a decent flat surface to sit the laptop on...

WELL!!!
i bought the g73 last nite from best buy.

i7 1.7ghz with the radeon 5870 and a 650g hd and 6gigs ram.
it doesnt have the 1080 screen but im ok with that i think.
it was 200 less than the newegg g73 that had the 1080 screen.

i am still updating windows and all that..
(getting an odd error that the live essential update is not working because i have a different build?)
im just going to uninstall the current live and reinstall it with whatever windows update is trying to give me....

i must say.. i havent gamed yet, but just browsing and installing last nite on my lap.. this thing stays rather cool to the touch.
all the heat is well directed out the back and away from my hands and thighs... unlike my old dells.. which blow underneath.

black ops was installed last nite while i was sleeping and im hoping to have some fun tonite after work!

1199 was what i paid.. still deciding if i should spend the 199 for 2 years of warranty from bestbuy.

So what does the standard warranty covers that you have now without the extended one?

I love this laptop.
once i got rid of the bloatware and uneeded processess, it has been a wonderful machine.
it plays everything i ask it to. beautifully. and for the money, i couldnt have found anything better.

i love the surface of it. reminds me of my old samsung blackjack. cool black rubbery surface.

Interesting. This (black rubbery surface) is what turned many off. I like the feel of it myself though. Many external gaming keyboard sport the same texture, for non-slippery I guess.

My dad has the G73JH that thing has a major issue where if you updated the GPU drivers it would GSOD, we sent it back and they fixed it but as we sent it back they released an unofficial GPU BIOS that fixed the problem, so when his friend got the same thing I flashed the GPU BIOS and it worked and updated fine :)
