Satellite M645-S4048 clean install

Hi guys,

I will be receiving my new Satellite M645-S4048 in a few days and I would like to do a fresh Windows 7 install on it (I don't like pre-installed bloatware and such).

My problem is I'm not sure which drivers to download on the Toshiba website. If I go to the support page, it gives me ALL the drivers for ALL Satellite models, even though I've selected my model and OS (Win7 64bits). (drivers' page is here).

Can anyone advise me on which drivers to download and install please?

Thanks for your help!

I would recommend when you first get your system:

1) Create a set of recovery disks
2) Back up all current drivers (there are some free software on the net that can help you out)
3) Download Speccy or Everest Home and create a printed report of what devices your system has - this would help in getting appropriate (applicable) drivers for the devices

Now regarding having a clean system - I would recommend that you first try with disabling (not removing) start up processes and services that you think you don't need. This way after a short while you would know for sure which apps and utilities you would need to make the comp runs once you wipe out the original set-up.

cheers ...

Hi qhn,

Thanks for your reply.

I'm confused by Toshiba's support page because they list several drivers for the same model, like there's several Intel graphics drivers (I know my laptop has an Intel HD integrated graphics card so NVidia drivers don't apply).

I guess I'll have to wait and see when I get it but I wanted to download everything now so I'll be all set when it's here.

Its very important to make the recovery disks on arrival...If things do not go well as planned with the "Clean install" or, you just get one of the components to work no matter what, you will at least be able to put it back into the configuration it was in when purchased...Too many people do not do this, then come back on these forums looking for a magic fix to restore it...just sayin

The reason why I recommend using Speccy or Everest Home to see which devices your system is carrying.

@saugen48, I'll probably burn the recovery discs but I found them to be useless with my previous laptop...

@qhn, I haven't used either of those programs in a long time but I guess I will have to, in order to download the correct drivers. Will report here when things are all set. Thanks again.

I removed all the junk apps from the system (Norton, etc...).

I also decided to burn the recovery DVDs (5 freaking discs!) and it turns out the last DVD is just Toshiba apps and drivers (1.4 GB on a 4.4 GB disc, what a waste...).

Now I'm torn between doing my own install or not. I might just run CCleaner and re-partition the HDD (500 GB drive has only one partition!) and use it that way. I usually like to do my OWN install though.

What do you guys think? Do you usually do a fresh install or use the pre-installed system?

My motto - use the original system and disabling what I don't need (start up processes and services), especially when I have plenty of disk space

Pretty much what I do as well...be careful with the recovery partition on your HDD as well...dont want to tamper with that if you want to use it in the future

I am of the same mind, it is pointless 'reformatting' a perfectly usable setup, you can uninstall and disable to get the desired results.. First piece of s**t I get rid of is Norton or Macafee slow ware... M$ now have their own security essentials which does the trick... What I would also do is to create two accounts, one as administrator and your own account as a general user.. This stops virus's executing and hosing the entire operating system in most cases and give s you a greater option for removing it rather than reinstalling and recovering... And password protect both accounts...

Yes, and giving it some malware protection as well as virus protection goes a long way...two programs to check for malware and are excellent, are Malwarebytes Free and Superantispyware (also free)...there is one called SpywareBlaster which stops most crap from loading...after you install it, update it and it should be updated periodically....for the other two when scanning, make sure you always update before scanning...Getting rid of Mcafee or Nortons, suggest going to their site and using the appropriate removal tool...gets it all...MS security essentials is said to be very good
