PDF downloaded, but system froze in Acrobat. Held down power button to turn laptop off.

On restart power button glows white, wifi and disk activity lights are on, but no light to secreen. Same result with both battery and mains power.

Any thoughts on what the problem is? Total screen failure would be a bit of a coincidence.

I would say so myself. What about external display, would you see something there?

Doh, should have thought of that.

Have hooked up monitor and there's nothing coming up. Good news in one way as it should mean it's not a new screen.

Anyone got any further thoughts?

Nothing coming up on an external is usually a bad new

You did try to toggle the FN keys for the display, right?

Other things we can try :

- take out the battery, the adapter, hold down the power button for about 30-40 secs
- remove the ram modules and re-seat them
- and try again with the adapter

Yes, did the toggling.

What do you mean by the adapter? Power lead?

Apologies for dimness.....

Thanks. Tried all of that and no result. Still the same except disk light not coming on now. Sounds as if there is something fairly fundamentally wrong.

Any further asuggestions welcome.

At this stage I usually try removing everything that I can and re-seating them (ram, hard drive, CMOS battery) and pray.

Is the notebook still under warranty?

Sadly not, expired about 3 months ago. I don't have the confidence to remove hard drive. Will have to take it in to be looked at.

Thanks for your help and advice.

Good luck. We do have dis-assembly guides here in the stickers should you want to give it a go.
