I seriously had my hopes up for a M17x, but is what I'm getting a better replacement gaming/photoshop wise? The whole 1GB gPU makes me think it's 1GB as a selling point but isn't as good as what I used to have

Decent specs for replacement, I would hope that they give you a core i7 at least

cheers ...

not bad, however i would try to get an i7 if possible... also same with the video card, 445 is the way to go. you can sacrifice the ram down to like 2gb and just replace it yourself. same thing with the hard drive (do they come any smaller? idk)

On paper it looks like a better system overall, but I could not find any benchmarks for the GPU.

You do get DX11 support.

If you really want the M17, sell this once you get it, get the M17x.

The M17x - R3 is rumoured to be comming in a few weeks anyways.

true the 435 gives at least DX11, but it runs off ddr3

here's a review and if you poke around on the site you can also take a look at their benchmarks and comparison tests

Yeah the other thing I don't like about it is it is only a 128 bit buss, the 7950GTX was a 256 bit buss. that can bottleneck things as well

I wouldnt be happy with the screen. I tried going from 1920x1280 WUXGA to a 720P 15 and I hated it. See if they will let you pay some $ to upgrade to a M17. Definatly get an i7 CPU though. I tried a HP with one and it was pretty quick. Its nice the have all those cpus and threads working for you,

Hey guys, thanks for your input!

I contacted Dell's XPS service and discussed with them that the XPS 17 is missing features the 1710 had like VGA, express, 1920x1080 res and 256 bit bus, and they ended up cancelling the XPS 17and said they'll work on an equivalent or better laptop.

Hopefully I'll get an m17x, maybe even i7

I'll keep you posted

After comparing the 285M to the radeon 5870 I realize that the standard m17x 5870 would've been a better choice, but is bottled necked at the 128bit bus which is probably why I got "upgraded" to the 285M.

I'm pretty happy with the upgrade, it may not be an i7 but I do appreciate the 2.4ghz

I'm gonna call later to see if I can get the case changed to black.

Thanks again guys for your points!

If you are into gaming the Intel Core i5 520M is very good (perfect even). The i7 is slated more for multi apps functionality - my personal feeling.

Enjoy the comp, and do give us a personal review when you have time.

cheers ...

Thats sweet replacment, and you will be happy with it.

upgrading the CPU or GPU is easy as well should you decide later

You can always put the ATI card in if DX11 is important to you.

and the RGB LED screen is awesome as well

Really Big improvment over your old laptop
