upgrading motherboard?

Is it possible to upgrade a dv8350us with a single core motherboard to a newer dual motherboard from another cosmetically identical laptop?

Primarily, I can't afford another notebook even though in the long run it is better and I wouldn't mind spending time and a little money on a little project.

What I like about the newer motherboard is that it can actually take SATA hard drives and it is dual core.

In theory, yes. It would be better if you can find the other system and swapping out the covers/casings with your current comp. This way at least the board, the heat sink and board peripheral devices are in one unit - less chance of messing things up.
