How to reinstall OS on DV6T..??

Hi,
I have a HP pavillon DV6t With the i7 Quad core and W7 pro 64X installed. Here is the thing....

I already bought another laptop and will be selling that one. Since I want to limit the risk for someone who I don't know buying it and being able to find some personal info in it, I want to format my whole HD and do a clean reinstall of W7...

Can I do that without the CD? Isn't there on the HD to be able to do it without the CD? Like I have 3 small partitions on my HD: HP tools, recovery and system. What are those?

If not, can I just use any CD that have the same W7 on it, and I just enter my HP key code and it will work?

I bought a Dell and have the Dell W7 OS CD, will it work in my HP?

Use the recovery - this should wipe out the current set up and put it back to the original state.

Perfect that's what I was hopping for that it could do... But now how do I actually do that with the recovery..?? Sorry I'm not an expert and need help to get going with this..

When I click on the recovery drive it's showing only one file: HP_WSD.dat and windows can't open that file....

I did a restart pressing F8 and I don't know if in the Advanced Boot Options there is an option for that. There is the: Repair you computer option but then it ask's me to enter my windows installation CD....

So I need a bit of help here please...

It doesn't work it say's" windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. to fix the problem: Insert your windows installation Disc and restart your computer. Info: then boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible"


I have not clue what is that all about... And like I said I don't have the disc.... Any idea what to do next..

Try with your DELL OS CD then, and hope that it does not check brand.

DO NOT use the DELL win7 CD it has the highest likelihood of hosing your operating system - keep it for your DELL... What you should do is create recovery DVD's using HP's software... They all generally do it this way these days and don't provide you with any discs... (I have just had B-i-Law's Laptop were the Vista partition boot failed, so he tried to recover it with his DELL OS disc, lost the lot, Itunes etc...)... Try using F8 just after the HP BIOS show and it gives the options to go into SAFE MODE etc.. Here there can be the option to 'Repair My Computer' - this takes you too recovery...

Should not matter Mr T since OP just wanted to wipe it all out before selling it.

Its not that, I mean it hoses the operating system completely... A recovery disc recovers the old OS, leaving the recovery partition alone, or recreating it, some as you are aware of use ghost to image... If you use a DELL recovery disc on another brand, it 99.9% of the time won't install the OS and renders the os on the hard drive unbootable, and most of the time beyond repair... I have lost count, the number of times I have had to repair this sort of operation by doing a complete fresh install, using their licence key.. (Thats why I wish they would ALL supply an OS disc, not a recovery disc, or a recovery partition - to M$, hard drives fail, sort your licensing out )...

If you truly wanted your personal stuff to be safe, replace the drive with a brand new one and either sell it with no OS, or borrow a disc and do a clean install.. (from a few simple commands and a bit of time I can recover basic stuff off a hosed drive, using free software and a bit of time, even I have been amazed at what I have got back off failed hard drives, usb sticks and flash cards....)
