CPU Swap and Heat questions< Compaq C300

Hello everyone. I found this site while researching a CPU swap for my Compaq C300. I swapped the CPU for two reasons. One being that the Celeron M was always running wide open and two because I do a lot of architectural rendering and i wanted to boost the speed of that a bit.

I just tried doing a few renders and i think my computer shut down because of overheating. My fan seems to run a lot more now which is expected. i have been watching the core temp and it goes from idle which is about 49 to 50C under 10 to 20% load all the way to 79 in the beginning of a render reaching about 80 to 81C while under 100% load. The processor is a Intel CO t1350 1.8 MHz. I used silicon thermal grease on the install. my fan is blowing and it feels mildly hot. The fan starts to wind up even when loading a page on the forum here. I have installed 2gb of ram also in this unit.

Should I be experiencing the wide range in CPU temps? Should the CPU be running at 80c when the processor is at 100% The old processor never shut down while rendering.

This was also my first CPU swap.

Any other suggestions on what is going on?

Thanks!

Christian

Did you happen to see if you have the latest BIOS version?

BIOS is up to date. Thanks!

Take a look at this C500 thread. I have the funny feeling that you are out of luck in upgrading CPU on the C300 since the motherboard and chipset kinda lock it down .

I had no problems updating the BIOS. The CPU just seems to be running very hot. I got it to shut down again last night while rendering. I'm currently using xp. Are there any stability programs I could run to diagnose the problem? The CPU is in and the computer boots and runs programs just as before. Just trying to figure out how to combat the heat problem.

You can try NHC (Notebook Hardware Control) or Speed Fan, hopefully it can assist you in throttling something down. Try also a notebook cooler?

OK, update.

I got it working. T1350 installed this time with Arctic Silver 5. I was using silicon thermal compound from Radio Shack. I just did a 12 minute render and the high temp was 59c fan ran much slower too.

I didn't think that the AS5 would make a difference but it really does.

This might explain some of the problems I was having with heat.

Very nice, thanks for the comeback. Yep - stick with brand names when using thermal paste. I use IC Diamond, keeping things cool
