Advent 5431 Stopped working

Hi,

My cousin has the Advent 5431 laptop and its just stopped working. They thought it could be the psu so bought a new replacement one, but its still not turning on or even charging the battery. Now I've had a look at it and tried the normal stuff like taking the main battery out and also tried removing the cmos battery and replacing that, but still no joy.

I did notice it was mucky inside and cleaned all the dirt out, but seems as none of the normal solutions have worked. I can either put it down to the PSU's or the AC socket that could be at fault. But when I took it apart my cousin told me a friend had a look at it which I was bad news.

Now I've taken a photo of the motherboard as theres 3 sockets that are missing things and I wasn't sure if there should be anything else connected as they haven't got a manual and I can't seem to find a manual or service manual.

Any help would be grateful as I don't want to go any further if it turns out to be something simple. But when the laptop has the ac adapter plugged in there's no sign of life at all.

Cheers

Aside from the slots for the memory, wireless card, and hard drive, which I assume you removed, it looks okay to me. Have you tried replacing or removing the battery before plugging in the AC adapter? It's possible that the battery is faulty or dead and preventing power from getting to the motherboard.

You might want to re-apply new thermal paste as well now that it is all opened up. Replace the power jack is the next step that I would try, if you are sure that the adapter is working correctly.

@Djembe Yep tried removing the main battery as I'd had the same sort of problem with a dell, but when the battery is removed there's still no life. I've only removed from the HDD, main battery and memory - wireless card is still there. I wasn't sure what the plug at the right side of the cmos battery was for.

@qhn I'm going to be applying some different thermal paste as that's what I normally do , with the ac socket - that's what I was thinking. But I'd asked my cousin if the ac adapter was working before and they've told me that they wasn't sure as its a compatible one that they bought from ebay - they'd lost the original one.

I would review the ac adapter specs and try getting another working one to test, before jumping on the power jack in this case.

Got thenew charger through today, plugged it in and it powered up first time - thought great.

Put the laptop back together and turned it on - or tried to and it cuts out. Tried a few times and it just kept cutting out. So took base of the laptop off and tried it again and it turned on, so theres something ont he base that's making the laptop cut out. Trouble is I can't find anything on the base that could make it cut out.

Any advice ??

Warping area? Cringing somewhere? Possibility of the "fitting" area around the jack that causes it "short" (not the right word I believe) out.

Thanks got it working now. I think the base of the laptop where all the metal is was bent a little, once I bent it back a little and tested it started to work correctly.

Thanks for your help.

Wow - the charlatan approach does work now and then

Glad to hear it works out for you, and thanks for the feedback and update. If you would attach a pic where that metal was all about, it would be great for other members.

Sorry I've got the laptop back together. But all the metal that I was talking about was in the base plastic's, its just above the cmos battery at the edge (its attaches to the top half of the motherboard in the pic above).
