Sager 5680 - still alive!

Hey all,

I bought my Sager 5680 a loooongg time ago (Fall 2003, Freshman year in college). A year or so after graduating (~2008), I retired the Sager and bought a Macbook Pro. This past weekend I came across a sweet black friday computer deal that would be made sweeter by trading in a computer. It got me thinking about the old Sager sitting in my basement, so I pulled her out and gave her a start.

I can't believe I almost traded this in. To my surprise, it booted into Windows XP with no issues, and after installing some updates, it's working great. The UXGA screen on the Sager kills the Macbook Pro's. I had a love/hate relationship with this laptop, which I nicknamed the BEAST. Love: Speed (although slowed over time), the LCD screen, the reliability. Hate: the build quality (the hinges on the LCD put pressure on the lid which causes it to crack over time, it happened to 2 lids I had, 2 lids on my friends Sager, and another lid on another friends Sager), fan noise (louder than an xbox 360), chunky size (but it was a gaming laptop from 2003 so I can't complain).

I doubt that my Sager can handle any crazy tasks anymore, but I just wanted to let everyone know that this Sager is still kicking.

Edit: My initial post may have seemed like all smiles and bubbles, but I do want to let everyone know that I strongly recommend against buying a Sager computer. The main issue is that I, like many others, have discovered design flaws with our laptops that have marred our owner experience. The inability of Sager and/or PC Torque to service such flaws are disappointing and downright embarassing. No doubt they saved money by not acknowledging that anything was wrong in the short run, but there is no way that me or my friends who were previous Sager owners will ever give them a 2nd chance. Not surprisingly, we are all macbook pro owners.

Welcome to the oldies club Many of my pre-2005 comps are still chuckling away, as with other members here.

Time to take your good old Sager apart, clean it up and applying new thermal paste. It will run better, cooler and quieter after that

cheers ...

Sagers have come a long way since 2003, as most laptop vendors have. The technology and design available in the early 00s has improve drastically.

I agree that design and technology has come a long way, but my main issue remains with the lack of service, options or long term fixes available from Sager. They basically realized there was a design flaw and didn't provide their customers with a proper resolution. There is nothing that leads me to believe that the same thing won't happen again if I ever choose to purchase another Sager.

In the long run, 3rd party-resellers with good after sales support will determine if the Sager brand survives.

My NP4760, which was bought in the end of 2004, died last year after serving me for 6 years. But it served well and for many years was able of beating most desktop computers around. This is why I remained on Sager's bandwagon and bought NP8760.

Just unearthed my 5760 after the desktop died. Still going strong. Not nearly as fast as I'd like, so thinking about picking up another Sager- best bang for the buck that I've found so far.

Do know about the design issues as my 8790 went through the overheating-GPU bit. That was back when 256mb worth o' video RAM was unheard of. Sager let me trade it in towards the 5760, so I have to disagree about nothing being done. I haven't contacted them since then as the 5760 has been rock-solid. Installing Vista on it at one point made it a complete disaster, but after putting XP back on, I can't remember having much to complain about.

My 5680 is on for several hours every day !, it's on it's 3rd operating system,3rd hard drive,2 bios updates, bad mem sticks, and once again...bad mem {Crucial is AGAIN sending me 2 under warranty} smile.gif 2 sets of broken lids/supports caused by the hinges being too stiff.

It looks hideous these days laughing.gif {buttons that broke, paint that wore off ,loud as hell, and not mobile at all} but the damn thing does almost everything I ask of it.

I'll likely pull the trigger on a new laptop or tablet next year.
