Hi guys i'm new here i have an advent laptop with a built in wireless card, i live in my own flat in a built up area were i can pick up a few wirless networks which are all secured.
A close friend also lives in the area and has given me permission to use his wireless connection he has a linkysys router which is secured i have the password to log on but my laptop struggles to keep a good connection at best i can get 1 bar out of 5 and it looses connection all the time.
I dont no if the built in wireless card my laptop has is anygood or what the range of it is i was wondering would it be worth buying either a better wireless card or a usb wireless plug in adapter and seeing if that will get me a better connection on the network or would it be a waste of money thanks for your help n advance.

Your best bet is to go with an external wireless card (USB or PCMCIA) coupled with a good antenna.

Is your friend next door? If not, you can be screwed with the signal due to a)distance, b) Barriers, ie walls etc c)interference from a multitude of things...

Best bet would be to get your own broadband connection in, or if your friend is a direct neighbour, hardwire or at least get an access point that boosts the signal...

how do i connect it to my laptops built in wireless network adapter then?

As mentioned before, you would need to invest in an USB wireless stick, then swapping out the antenna that comes with the stick with the Cantenna.

my dads got a netgear wirelss-G usb 2.0 adapter i used to use its not got the greatest of range tho even worse than my laptops built in one but would that be ok to use as the usb wireless adapter for the cantenna to work with? The pic of the adapter my dad has is below.

That won't work since you would need some sort of antenna connection. Unless of course you find a way to tweak that USB stick to replace its internal antenna with an extension.

cheers ...
