At AVG virus software!!

They released a virus definition yesterday that took out a number of Windows 7 64 bit computers. Mine being one of them. It would not boot up at all last night after the auto update from AVG. I see this morning that they are saying they are sorry and giving some directions on how to fix things. Sad part is, I lost a bunch of stuff last night and had no idea it was due to AVG. I used the recovery disks that I created when laptop arrived to reinstall Windows 7.
Here is where I have a question for you all. I have the Asus A52F. It created 4 recovery disks when I went through that process, but last night it only used disk #1. Why, did it not use the other 3 disks? Am I missing some of what should have been installed?

Thanks, Ron

It probably just drivers and apps on the other disks. Did it start up ok after the (one disk) installation?

I recommend MSE (used AVG, then AVAST in the past)

It did start up just fine after using recovery disk 1, just minus all of the stuff that I had done over the last few weeks. I did have most of the important stuff backed up.

When you say drivers and apps, are those not things that should also be installed? I just don't know.

Dumb question!! What do you mean when you recommend MSE for virus protection?

Thanks, Ron

The antivirus you were using is AVG. QHN was recommending Microsoft Security Essentials, a free antivirus by Microsoft. Personally, I use the free version of Avira for antivirus.

Regarding the multiple discs, Asus provided you with a simple way to restore your system from Disc 1, but they also included a lot of software with the computer that you can re-install, if you choose, from the other discs.

Thanks!

Can you give any ideas as to what that other software is?

Thanks, Ron

You mean from the other disks? Just browse them and see.
