DVD writer won't verify

Hi everybody!

Haven't been able to write to disk for quite awhile with this Acer 5735-6694.

The most pressing issue is the Acer backups. They're recorded on the int HDD, but everytime I try to write to disk, it fails on the verify step.

I've also tried to do a simple video burn and that also fails.

Have you tried using different brand discs? Sometimes a disc burner just doesn't work well with certain brands.

Hi Djembe - yes, I went back to using Verbatim 16X, which had worked in the past. I had switched to HP 16X, but they didn't work, so I switched back.

Hmmm.. Can you finalize the discs? Verification should be an optional step. If you can finalize a disc without verifying, try that and see if it works.

If it still doesn't work, as a last ditch effort before replacing the DVD burner, you can check for firmware updates for your drive.

It's the Acer program, so verification is not optional. And, when burning from a video file in W7, it doesn't prompt whether to include or skip verification; only whether to use the thumbdrive mode (for DVD-RW) or permanent mode.

How about trying a free burning app like CDBurnerXP?

Hi qhn - will installing CDBurnerXP just prove whether the Acer int DVD writer will write at all or will it write the Acer backup files to disk?

If it works, it should confirm both things for you. I am not sure about the specific for Acer back up program, but if it is only to write files back and forth, CDBurnerXP should be fine.

cheers ...

We're in the Acer Notebook forum. Hasn't Acer installed the same "Empowering Technology" software in every single one of their notebooks? Do you know the backup software I'm asking you about?

More than a year ago, you advised me to use the Acer backup software rather than the MS backup program. I am not aware of any option in the Acer ET software that lets the user select a destination (for example to an external HDD instead of to CD or DVD) or to be able to substitute a disk writing program like CDBurnerXP or MS WMP for the Acer program to write the Acer backup files to DVDs. Please let me know if I've missed something.

Use the CDBurnerXP to confirm that your drive is still working correctly with burning and reading CDs/DVDs.

Try using your MS back up program to confirm that the app works with the optical drive.

If the above apps can access your optical drive then your ACER ET ding is corrupted - try a re-install of the app. If the above apps don't work then your optical drive is failing - this is your original query, is it not?

First, I've tried to burn a DVD from existing MP4s using Windows DVD Maker--no good. Then, I downloaded the CDBurnerXP program you recommended. The first thing you notice is that it says "no compatible drives" in the target device field. Anyway, I loaded some MP4s into that utility, and tried to burn them to DVD, but it failed.

Device Manager says the driver is up to date for the CDDVDW, and that the device is working.

Should the CDDDVW appear under "Devices and Printers" in the Control Panel? Right now, it doesn't.

Have you checked your drive properties to see if it's a dvd writer?
Go to
My Computer
right-click
select properties

On the General tab for DVD RW Drive E for type "CD Drive" is listed.

On the Recording tab, for Select the disc-burning drive that Windows will use by default, it displays "DVD RW Drive E" on the button.

Are these the correct identifiers for those tabs?

And, can you answer my earlier question to qhn as to whether the DVD RW should appear in "Devices and Printers" in the Control Panel?

Thanks!

Correct - it does not. It should be inside Devices Manager with its own entry.

Great. Is software rule out as the cause for the CDDVD writer not working?

Probably. But just to be sure, I would use the same software and try that with an external burner.

Yes, of course. Buy an external burner cause the one that's supposed to work, that was paid for with the laptop and has hardly been used, ain't workin.

Sometimes a re-installation of OS might work out.
