aftermarket battery not charging

Thread Starter
My original battery stopped holding charge in my 6400 so I purchased a new aftermarket 9 cell & now upon startup I get this message:
WARNING: The model number for the primary battery cannot be determined. This will prevent any battery from charging. Please insert a Dell battery for best results.

I tried to update the BIOS but it wouldn't due to the battery having less than 10% charge.

Where should I go from here? Surely there's a way around this?

Try posting your question in the battery section. Those guys might have an idea.

If you have any warranty on the new battery ask for an exchange

It sounds like your battery is not a OEM part, but I never heard of a laptop giving this message with one before either

Dave, I too have received that message on an after-market battery I purchased on eBay. Fortunately, eBay had my back and I got a refund.

Many cheap knockoff batteries don't have the circuit to properly communicate with the BIOS and won't work as expected. The only option is to return the battery for refund or exchange with one that functions correctly. If the seller is legit, they'll refund with no problems.

Unfortunately there are many unscrupulous sellers out there trying to make a quick buck and counterfeiting batteries is easy money if they can get away with it.
