Hi, I have a laptop emachine M5312, it's old but it was working good until suddently started to run super slow...and lately is shutting down it self. When ever I turn it on; it will shut down. I can do absolutely nothing with it, I thought it was the memory at first because it was so slow... but then this, I have no clue what its going on....can somebody help me? When the laptop starts at the back it becomes very hot, I was comparing to another laptop and this one it doesnt heat as much as my emachine. I dont know where to start the search for this problem. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

How long after it boots does it shut down by itself?

Boot up to linux, or boot to any CD program such as norton ghost, memtest, a hard drive utility, etc. If the problem goes away, you have a faulty motherboard. When windows loads there is an issue that has plagued many of these arima built laptops.

If it still does it, but it takes longer, then you need to pull the laptop apart and replace the thermal pad with fresh thermal paste (white). No need to get fancy and use expensive arctic silver crap. Also wash the heatsink or use an air hose to blow the dust off. Inspect the (2) cooling fans as well.

It doesn't boot, it shuts down, for example: will shut right after gets to desktop, or even before uploading the desktop.

Follow my directions above. It is not hard to diagnose. Once you figure it out, you will either part out the laptop, or clean and regrease the heatsink with new thermal paste.

there are other things that can cause the random shutdowns, Avira for me and/or vid drivers that are fubared somehow just to name a couple......my 6810 just started the random fan spinup, then immediate shutdown, since I carefully clean the sucker out frequently and have gone the thermal paste route each time, I had to look elsewhere for the problem...dumped Avira for Avast Premium, updated vid drivers to latest Omega Mobility....no shutdowns since doing these things.....

Also, I have a 4000+ cpu upgrade I put in, it runs a little hotter than the 3200+ it replaced, and it runs nicely bumped to @2.8gig on stock volts, so the @2.6gig stock/default runnings, I under volted it from 1.35 to 1.25v, lowering temps about 12*c at idle, full load now never goes beyond 43* tops, idle ranges from 32*c to 36*c.....no need to clock up, it is plenty fast for everyday usage, email, picture viewing/editing on all digitial shots, great mini TV for internet feeds, use it to compile and burn DVD's sometimes, although a bit slow by comparison to my main rig, lol....

now she runs nice a cool.....RMClock to do the nasties on the volts and monitor temps, ClockGen 1.0.5.3 to do the FSB changes for clockage.....

YMMV

good luck

laterzzzzz...........

Thanx, I appreciate your comment, but this is too "tech" for me...I will have to drop it to a pc tech so at least I know what's wrong with it...
