FS: Asus Z71v for parts or repair, $100

Hi all,

I have a Asus 71v (rebranded as Chembook) with the infamous video card failure. Since I have no inclination to fix it, I am giving up to a good home. I am looking at you, other Z71 owners who are determined on keeping theirs running and are looking for spare parts.

Other than the video card, the only other major fault is the battery (good for about 10 minutes before shutting down). The ram has been upgraded to 2GB (2x1gb, Corsair) about a year ago. At the same time the hard drive was replaced with an 80gb 5400rpm Maxtor drive (the original Hitachi 7k60 failed). Also you will notice it says "Replacement AC Adapter" on the power brick, that is also a fairly recent addition. It works fine.

The keyboard is fully functional and reasonably clean. The LCD is fantastic, no dead pixels as far as I can tell. The screen alone is probably worth what I'm asking for the whole thing. The CPU is in good shape, never overclocked or abused in any way. Like I said before the ram, hdd, and A/C Adapter are only about a year old.

There are some surface scratches, but no cracks or anything seriously wrong with the chassis.

**hdd will be wiped prior to shipping

I do accept Paypal. Can do local pick-up near Chicago or shipped (buyer pays shipping).

Thanks for looking.

Its not the LCD, its the video card at fault here. External monitor yields same result:

brings back memories of my Z71V

Had 3 of these, easy fix. Keep plenty of airflow under the laptop and it should last a long time after the fix.

if a mod could take this thread down please.

I fixed it.

1. Disassemble, clean all the vents, etc.
2. Strip old "thermal pads" from gpu and cpu heatsinks.
3. Remove GPU
4. Bake (as in..in the oven) GPU for 8 min at 375F
5. Let it cool slowly (leave it in warm oven, leave door open
6. When it reached room temp, plug it in and begin reassembly
7. Apply a fresh layer of ArcticSilver5 to both CPU and GPU chips
8. Complete re-assembly.
9. Attach external (USB-powered in my case) laptop cooler base with fans (max fans)
10. Profit.

Its been running for about 10 minutes now (granted at idle)...so so far looks good.
We'll see how it holds up.

But as far as this thread goes, not on sale anymore, actually might have a use for it now (pending my shake and bake fix holds up).
