Chrome Notebook - Page 2

I read the specs on the Google Chrome Notebook site and it did mention that the screen is 12" diagonal. I would expect it to be 1366x768 as other screens in that size class typically are.

That was my prediction too.

Though if I look at this CR-48 closely, it is very much the same as the Acer ZGA (AOG761) that is currently being scrapped due to late Chrome OS. And this machine, if holding true to other Acer 12" series, will come with 1200 x 800 resolution screen.

Well, there may be something to that prediction qhn. A 1200x800 resolution on a 12" screen would be very easy on the eyes. I know my new Acer Aspire 1430 with the 11.6" 1366x768 is a bit of a strain for my 46 year old eyes ... I would love to get my paws on one of these babies! I have a friend who is an engineer at Google, I sent him a note a few days ago to hint that any help he could offer would be appreciated! I seriously doubt if that will do any good, but what the heck ...

I agree with the resolution. I went to pick up the 11'' MacBook air and took one look at that tiny text at 1366.x768 and went to the 13''. I just can't take that small text anymore. I'm thankful I have eyes, I'm not going to strain them if I don't have to unnecessarily.

I did not realize there was both an 11" and a 13" MacBook Air!

I know, my new Acer at 11.6" is very hard to see. I have to use my distance vision lenses and view from about 28 inches away ... :-0

My MacBook Pro 15.4" seems huge now!

Death before leaving the gate?

Quote:
Former Googler, FriendFeed founder and Facebook-er turned investor Paul Buchheit just tweeted this zinger:

"Prediction: ChromeOS will be killed next year (or “merged” with Android)"

Considering his former employer just launched the Chrome OS pilot program last week, the comment may sting a little over at Mountain View, although it should be noted Buchheit is hardly the only one predicting that Google’s Linux-based operating system will go the way of the Wave soon enough.

Google to date has posited that Android and Chrome OS, its two operating systems, address different markets that will remain distinct despite the growing convergence of the devices they run on (netbooks, tablets, smartphones). Google co-founder Sergey Brin, however, has stated in the past that Google will likely “produce a single OS down the road”.

Ironically, the key architect of the Chrome OS project, Matthew Papakipos, left Google over the Summer — for a job at Facebook, Paul Buchheit’s most recent former employer.

If the man’s less-than-140-characters prediction is right on the money, Android will become the dominant operating system – and considering its current traction, that would hardly be a surprise – while Chrome OS will perish before 2011 is over.

Update: more from Buchheit in the FriendFeed thread:

"ChromeOS has no purpose that isn’t better served by Android (perhaps with a few mods to support a non-touch display).

I was thinking, “is this too obvious to even state?”, but then I see people taking ChromeOS seriously, and Google is even shipping devices for some reason.
"
Interesting piece of new.

Time to update this invention of the year thread winknudge.gif

. Sales so far has been (very) disappointing - lucky if it is hitting the 5K mark
. Google is now confirming supporting NTFS format for external storage devices, so this means that they are adding off-line support (smart move, took them a while, but better late than never) laugh4.gif
