Query about upgrading the hard drive on a Samsung R540 i3-370M

I'm due to be receiving a Samsung R540 i3-370M laptop in the next few days for free as part of my studies at university in the UK as I qualify for one as a disabled student (I have epilepsy and it qualifies as a disability under the laws here) and it turns out that the suppliers of the equipment that I need for my course when they ordered it didn't know that there were two version of the same laptop available (in fact, I didn't know either!); one with 3GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive and one with 4GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive.

I thought they ordered the version with the 4GB of RAM and 500GB hard drive that another supplier had quoted to the student finance people.

I spoke to the Orders department yesterday and they said they'll try their best to get one for me with the 4GB RAM/500GB hard drive but they can't give any guarantees especially as the laptops most of their suppliers provide come with 3GB of RAM and 320GB hard drives.

In the event that I may need to upgrade the hard drive, would I be able to upgrade it to something bigger than a 500GB hard drive, in other words a 750GB or a 1TB hard drive?

Yes you can, Western Digital has some drive size models for notebooks already.

That's good to know... At least if I do get stuck with a crappy 320GB one, I can hopefully buy a 1TB hard drive and stick it in there.

On another note, would I have to do a brand new install of Windows 7 on the new hard drive along with the software that comes on the orginal disc or should I just do a image of the original drive and copy it to the new drive?

You should be able to clone it and swap out the drive. There are free tools for it - check out our Software Section/Freeware thread for tips and suggestions.

cheers ...
