EDIT: The 285m would be a Sli set-up.

From everything I've read, Ati is more powerful but crappy (driver) support, and Nvidia is more stable, but not as much power.

What would you guys choose?

I prefer NVIDIA myself, but there is no arguing the ATIs are benchmarking higher

But in game performance is a closer result from what I have read.

Also should consider the the new R3 is probably going to be released in January which will feature sandy bridge chipsets and 460/470 GPU options as well asn the ATI 6xxx series cards

I'd wait for January. Even IF you decide to go with the older system, it will be even cheaper. However Sandy Bridge has a nice long list of improvements, and you'll be able to pick 4xxM's or 6xxxM chips from whichever graphics vendor you prefer. And it is set to be released on Jan 5th.

With so many sneak peaks it wouldn't surprise me if Intel released Sandy Bridge to market on Dec 24th, just to be cute. But aside from that speculation, the promised release date is Jan 5th, and there are machines in the wings that look ready to be released on that date.

I totally agree with them even though a 920/940 extreme will be incredibly cheaper than the newest chipset their should be great improvements the GTX 285 is alright cross-fire 5870 still beats them in gaming and benchmarking. Now the argument of the gx 460 has 116 pipe streams while the 470M has less than that but again the benchmarking and gaming performance between it all will have us make a decision.
