Upgrading M17-R1 from 32 to 64bit

I have a M17-R1 purchased in Jan 09 with the following specs:

Intel 2.26 GHZ P8400 3M
3GB DDR3 PC3-8500 SODIMM 1066MHZ
Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit

I am wanting to upgrade it to 64bit, but didn't know if my current cpu would handle it or make much of a difference. I have already ordered another 4GB memory chip to add on. Will the payoff versus the effort to upgrade to 64bit be enough? Any thoughts on this would be appreciated, or if someone has already done this please chime in. Thanks.

Your current specs can support 64-bit with no issue. More ram is always better but not necessary unless you plan to do more than what you currently do with your hardware.

Thanks for the quick reply. Do you think I will see any improvement going to 64bit? I do plan to upgrade to 6 gig of ram at the same time.

I found this remark from Microsoft very fitting

Quote:
Windows 7 64-bit does not translate to being faster than Windows 7 32-bit, but sometimes it can be running slower due to the larger pointers it use as well unrelated OS overhead (more ram would help in this case).

But performance will be greatly improved since applications can now access more memory where available. These more memory space allows more processes to actively reside in the system RAM simultaneously. This potentially eliminates or reduces time spent loading and switching between processes, a condition that can lead to “thrashing” when all the processor’s efforts are spent merely loading and switching between threads.
It all boils down to which apps you are using, if the apps can take advantage of the 64-bit architecture.

Thanks again, this is good info to have. Do you know if upgrading to 64 bit and more ram will address the common cpu stuttering problem that the m17's have? I haven't been able to find any solid info on whether that particular problem has a solution.

Can you expand a bit more about stuttering, and when did you experience it? Gaming, surfing ...?

I've seen others on here talk about it maybe having something to do with the cpu, but haven't seen a solution. Basically, from time to time the cursor will stutter across the screen, or take a few seconds to catch up when moving around the screen. The cpu usage will show 100% and there seems to be nothing that can be done to stop the issue. It can last a few minutes or longer. A video playing will sound like a buzz saw, the sound will run together. There doesn't seem to have a specific incident that triggers it. I use my computer for surfing and apps, no games. Most of the time I will just restart the system.

There was a DPC latency problem a year ago, but the lastest BIOS and driver up[dates have fixed that, not sure about any other issues with CPU studdering
