Inspiron 9300 power issue

Ok, I have the replacement battery, which is near dead, but the main issue is the computer will not stay on unless the battery is in.

If I take the battery out, the computer can shut down at any moment.

The little green power light flickers on and off, randomly.

I have two different power cords and it does the same thing with both, using different outlets.

Is this a fried motherboard?

Boot into the BIOS and see if the laptop identifies the ac adaptor correctly or does it say unknown ?

It says battery not installed, ac adapter {none}

Give another ac adapter (without the battery) a try. I know - you wrote you tried 2 others, get a 3rd known working one with the OEM specs.

Update, I have been trying to get some power cords, this is what has happened so far.

The original was a PA-10 family, just got a PA-12 from someone, that did not work. I am getting a PA-3E to try today or tomorrow, it is 90 watt but don't know if that will make it work or not.

Also, I found this knock off for $3, I wonder if anyone has any knowledge if this will work or not.

I would go for it just to try out for $3 Amazon has good warranty anyway.

I just tried the PA-3E and it does the same thing as my old cords. Light flickers on and off, the battery eventually dies.

Boot with just the Ac adptor (no battery) into the BIOS and tell me if it identifies the AC adptor ?

Well the PA 3E is not even producing a green light now, so with a dead battery I got nothing. It did produce a green light for a few minutes, I got a boot, but then it turned orange and died. Will see if it comes back.

Take the knocked-off PA-10 part and test it, at least that was what your system came with.

Well I wanted to start off by thanking you guys, I appreciate the help so far.

I got the new cord and it worked pretty well for about 5 minutes and then began to behave like the old cords, ie green light will not stay on, and eventually the orange light starts flashing as the computer prepares to die.

However, I did log into the bios and while the computer does not recognize the battery, it DOES recognize a 90 watt adapter. At least the time I tried it. I should try again.

Sounded like the power board is failing (?)

I'm not sure my computer has a power board, or where it would be, here is the service manual TOC

Could it be another part?

You have the power jack right next to the VGA port if I am not mistaken, take a close look around that area and see if there is any defects or loose soldering points.

Ok, I took apart the computer and could find nothing wrong with anything, visual inspection. None of the cords produce even a flicker of green now and the battery is drained. I think I'm headed to the repair shop.

Tried wiggling the power jack with the board exposed?

Yes, no effect.

Ok, dell chat person tells me replacement mother board is $400, they only have 5 left. Sounds like BS. He also says motherboards cannot be repaired reliably.

Not sure what to think yet.
