NP5793 windows app performance windows 7?

I installed windows 7 some months ago. I've always had a problem with windows performace. I get good Windows Index scores but say when I'm in the picture viewer looking at 4mb photos skipping through it pauses lots and takes ages to load when you go back through them. Now I thought this was just the computer not fast enough but my sister recently got a Dell which has the P9500 (my NP5793 has the P9300) cpu, also the Dell has faster ram, bigger HDD and slightly slower (then 8800gtx) ATi video. Now this Dell can easly quickly go through photos etc. It also boots quickly, as in after logging in you can do stuff and it isn't slow. Mines slow, like takes 30 seconds to load Firefox, for a good 2 minutes after logging in.

So my question is, how come it is so slow? Drivers? I've got all the latest ones that work from Sager and Clevo websites. including some from the NP5796. There isn't much installed, well a bit but it was this slow just after installation anyhow..
It was also this slow before going to Windows 7, I installed 7 hoping it would clean it up a bit and speed it up.

When was the last time you cleaned the whole comp up (inside) and applying new thermal paste?

The drive could be on its last leg as well.

I cleaned the heat sinks about 5 months ago, no change in performance.. I didn't take them off though. Also the Windows index gives my HD 5.5, same as it was when it was new (but does this actually mean anything? I haven't been "into" computers for a long long time so I've lost touch with this stuff.)

I would take the heat sink off and applying new thermal paste if you haven't done so for over a year. Check to see if there is any BIOS updates, review the disk controller properties (DMA where available). Windows index does not mean much when coming to hardware going bad or not.

DMA is enabled.
Its a ST9200420ASATA Seagate, 200gig 40gig free. Is there an easy to download tool I can test it with to see if its still up to speed of a new drive? Or compare it with my brother who has the exact same laptop.
You have a Seagate, use their free tool here.

Same software set up like your brothers? Virus scanner, background processes ...

He has same computer, running Vista x64. Same antivirus, but he has a lot less software installed and more hard drive space.
What I find weird though is it runs the same as it has done in games still, just windows stuff that it is slow.. Downloading that tool now. Will test on both laptops.

Passed all tests with that tool .But none of them looked like performance tests. So not sure if that means anything.
What about comparing your software environment against your brother's?

Software environment, as in??

Antivirus? Start-up processes? OS level? Extra apps that you use, but not your brother ... Just trying a process of elimination

I would do this personally:

- download cCleaner, install and run it
- disable upeksvr.exe, StikyNot.exe, SynTPEnh.exe, SynTPHelper.exe, Protector Suite 2009 in start-up processes
- uninstall Avast completely and re-install it - or just for kick use another free virsus scanner like Microsoft Security Essentials.

Try again.

Thanks. I will try that. At the moment I stopped the long log in time, there was something about the background image slowing it down. Just done a reg entry which fixed it so now I can open Firefox within 10seconds of logging in, instead of having to wait 40 to 50 seconds.

I find the finger print login very useful as I cannot use no password and have network sharing working for some reason. And instead of having to use a password on everything I just swipe my finger.. I know it will slow things down, but when I got the laptop it was on and working and it ran very fast so I can't see it being the issue, or at least not the cause.

Thank you for your help, and merry christmas.

I am with qhn esp on the antivirus... I would also run a disk cleanup, scandisk and defrag the hard drive again.. Then install Malwarebytes AntiMalware and update it, then run it in safe mode - it surprises you what it finds... Get rid of uTorrent - any torrent program will slow a system down as it continually runs in the background and there is a high potential for an exploit (virus/malware etc) to get in.. Disable any programs that take a snapshot of the system and any that grab a picture of the desktop - these can really bog a system down.. And from past experience, ensure any virtual machine program is disabled - these loading at boot can cause issues...

I have a fingerprint reader on my old Toshiba U200 - disabled and software uninstalled - totally slowed system down after an IE update and no work round...

Maybe you want to create another profile when you are not in the network. Review the whole network set up, something is not going right here.

And a Merry Christmas to you too.

It is a complete pleasure watching computer enthusiasts helping each other out -- it is just awesome!

qhn's advice is spot-on so I'm sure that by now everything worked out fine on this as no activity since December last.

In case it has not resolved, have a look at this other post I made on this forum, as it lists a routine I came up with a while back to resolve "Slow PC Syndrome" that has proven to be very effective:

http://www.notebookforums.com/forum/thread/236665/sony-vaio-pcg-7f1l-running-slow-worth-it-to-fix-it#post_3239923

As for Mr T's advice, I am definitely in agreement that you should do a thorough defrag as that will handle a lot of stuff as well.

The above thread goes into a lot of detail on defragmentation as well as many other points.

Good luck and I hope this all worked out for you.
