Dell 1520 - DVD burner not reading a new game disc

Son's Laptop in my Siggy. 1520 w/Win 7 on a 250Gb HD. DVD player reads most any disc just fine, kids got Sims 3 Games for XMAS, and it is not recognized on this PC. Disc works fine on my desktop and other Son's Laptop. But on this one the disc just keep doing a search, you can hear it doing a constant disc access routine. I can then put a DVD in and it works fine. But nothing I do can get it to run this brand new Sims 3 disc.

Any ideas?

Thanks and Happy Holidays all!

Hmmm, good question. No idea if the Sims 3 is DL. That said, other Sons S-1555 saw the disc just fine and installed the game. That is a 2yr newer laptop, but I don't know if it has DL capability. (I know my Desktop does)

put the disk in the computer that does read it and see what size of disk is identified if it is > 4.7 Gb it is a dual layer

Then verify the Drive specs on the laptop in question by looking at the model number.

Sure enough, the disc is 5.13GB. Next question, all I saw on Newegg were SATA slimline drives, this thing in the device manager reads as ATA. (I assume its a IDE) Where to find...guess eBay. Hmmm.

Thanks!

best way to identify the proper drive is to get the model number from Device manager look at the model number on the CDROM tab

A quick google of the drive model number will tell you if it is Serial ATA (SATA) or IDE.

Also a search on ebay by laptop model may well get you the list of compatible CD drives
most likely it is a sata drive if a newer laptop

Well it is a '07 model, and looks like Dell screwed us a bit. Device manager lists it as a "tsstcorp dvd+-rw ts-l632d ata device" but logging the service tag into Dell Support and they offer an upgrade firmware for a "tsstcorp dvd+-rw ts-L632H" which of course does not work when I try. (reports wrong device cause, well it is!)

Looking at Ebay I see it seems to be a EIDE/ATAPI inteface, but I see mostly used parts, I would want to add a newer device that I know supports DL. (though the Ebay ones say they do...) Something about this just doesn't smell quite right for sure...

yeah there seems to be conflicting info on this drive

Some identify the laptop as having a Sata I/F and some EIDE

it is possible Dell had both depending on revision.

or Dell has a interfacr from sata to EIDE.

The drive specs indicates it's supposed to support Dual Layer on some sites as well.

where others I found in some tech forums did not.

Check this link out it seems to be the right one
