Acer Aspire 5633WLMI Screen/display question

Hello. After years of using this notebook, I thought It was time for a new OS installation and choose Vista Ultimate this time. No problems at all since all drivers can be found on the Acer site, except drivers for the 15” WXGA screen. Now, it all works with the "standard PnP" but I'm under the impression that under the installation with Vista Home from Acer, a specific screen was installed and not an "standard PnP". But I can't find any driver fot the LCD Screen (crystalbrite no less) on the acer site. I already contacted Acer but their response is like "PnP is just as good" (no, it really isn't) or....buy a dvd with Vista Home from them, since erecovery doesn't work anymore. Since I like Vista Ultimate way more than Vista Home, I hope someone can help me with installing the real screen under Vista and get the better quality again.

Have your tried the VGA driver from this support site? It's for Aspire 5630 Series.

The VGA drivers there are all about the graphic cards (Intel or Nvidia) I think, and I'm talking about the screen itself. As far as I can see there are no drivers for the screen there and Vista doesn't recognise it and just installs it as a standard PnP. Or am I overlooking a something ?

There is no driver for the screen itself. What you have from the message is that Vista does not recognize the type of screen via the graphic driver. Give the driver a shot.

Already installed the Intel graphic card, even with more recent drivers then you can find on Acer site. Even tried the one you refered to and "downgraded" the driver but no luck. Screen is still not recognised by the Intel graphic tool (Intel Graphic Media) or by Vista. So thanks for the tip but no luck.
Maybe someone who still uses this notebook and has the "original" Vista Home instalation on it can look under system and tell me how (name) the screen itself is exactly installed and which "drivers" it uses. Then I can maybe google for that.
Don't get me wrong, Vista and hardware is installed without problems but the quality of the graphics was better under the original Vista Home installation, then it is now under the new installation. For example, under the Home installation the "vieuwing angle" had less "graphicle disformation" (if you know what I mean" then right now. As I already said, I do believe that under the original installation the screen wasn't installed simply as standard PnP, but by real name/maufacturer and I also believe that is simply "better".

Have you tried forcing (manually updating the driver ) the display device to look at the driver folder instead of running the automatic setup?

No, that doesn't work either. Again, on the site there are only Intel and Nvidia VGA drivers and tools that can be found (or that I can find !). In other words, all graphic card drivers/tools and not drivers for the screen itself.
If only I would know the exact type of the screen (LCD TFT WXGA 15" as found in the specifications is a bit to vague), maybe I could find some drivers then online. As I said, respons from acer itself was...it's a Plug and Play screen so you don't need specific drivers (or else buy their cd !)

In the link above, there is an Intel chipset driver. Have you installed that as well?

Didn't help.

Your Vista Ultimate is up to date, correct?

Completely, and since PnP monitor is installed in stead of a "real monitor", Windows update also doesn't suggest other or new updated drivers for it.

You can try as next resort to remove the display device within device manager and see if Windows can pick up other saved driver files in your system - don't let Windows automatically install the device, but point it to the drivers yourself.

OK, found a solution to restore acer laptop without using erecovery dvd's or the ctrl/F10 key. Now I have the Vista Home installation back, I'll just make a logfile with all specific drivers and devices so I will have a reference when I install Ultimate back.

Very nice. Would you share the solution and the drivers list?

Used "Ultimate Boot CD" which I downloaded thru usenet. You can also download it via FTP for example (just google it), but two versions were corrupted (iso files) so I turned to usenet. Then boot with the burned cd. Use "smart bootmanager" so you can activate the hidden partition (HD 0 for example) and restart laptop (possible to give this commando in the bootmanager !). Then the laptop (without boot cd in drive !) boots with the hidden partition in stead of your normal c partition/disk and the original "first installation" from Acer (erecovery) starts once again.....

So big thanks to the acer support group for giving the only solution......buy cdrom for 60 Euros.
No, all you need is a bootable cdrom with "smart bootmanager" on it and a hidden partition that isn't corrupted, offcourse. If this partition is faulty, unaccessible or gone, then the only solution would be buying acer-cdroms.
