Problems with installing 2 drivers(acer travelmate 654Lci)

Hello, i have problems to install 2 drivers on my old travelmate 654Lci. The old hard disk was not good anymore and i replaced it with a new one. I did a new xp professional(SP3) installation on it and i found the few missing drivers on the acer site. All went well but when i tried to install the Ati driver and restarted the notebook, i could not move the cursor anymore and do anything. I restarted, it was the same. Restarted again and went to safe mode, no problem and i used system restore. The same with the driver for the wlan. When i install the wlan driver first, there is no problem when the notebook restart. But when i install first a few other drivers, the same problem. The problems beging always after restarting. I tried also installing with XP professional SP2 but it is the same. I have got a legal xp professional(number on the original sticker at the bottom) and i did all the microsoft updates. Without the ati driver and the wlan driver is my notebook working well, but i want the wlan working. I tried also with a 3COM wlan card and when i install it, i have got the same problem. I want to give the travelmate to my grandchild(9 years old) but i want to find a solution for these problems first. I tested the ram(512Mb) with memtest and there are no errors. I do not know what to do now. Thanks for the help.

Did you install the chipset driver found on the support site before installing either the WLan or ATI driver?

Yes, that is the page. I do not know if it is important but i did not flash the bios and the bios settings are the default ones.

Is it possible for you to remove the (internal) WLAN card and try again with the graphic driver?

I did that already with the same result as before. I also tried a 3Com wlan card instead of the internal one. I even tried with no internal or the wlan card also. I tried also only installing the wlan only(after the chipset, lan, smartcard reader, modem). If i install the wlan as first, no problems, but when i install after that, 2 more drivers, i got the same problems

Tough nut to crack.

. When was the last time the machine was being taken apart for cleaning? Try that.

. I read that you tested the ram, but still, how about getting another stick to try out?

I removed last week the top and bottom case for inspection. Everything seems oke and clean. There was no dust inside and all the wires or conneectors were oke. With: getting another stick, you mean new ddr-ram? Now, there are 2 on it with each 256Mb.

Take one out and test them both on one slot at a time.

Maybe the hard drive died because of a failure elsewhere on the motherboard... However, try a force install of the ATI driver by going to Device Manager and doing an update driver from the drop down box when you right click over the display adaptor.. Also run a lan cable to the laptop and do a full windows update - ATI drivers need net framework to install....

All updates are already done from the start of and there is always a lan connextion. I did the drivers install trough device manager( i always do that). I will test the ram one by one again.

I took one out and tested it(memtest), no errors. No errors also with the other. I downloaded Windows Memory Diagnostic tool and burned it on a cd and started up the notebook with the burned cd. Took extended tests(17 test) as option and let it run all night. It did several passes of the extended tests. No errors were found.

Safe Mode ok, ram ok, inside ok, 1-2 drivers ok ... I'd try with another hard drive next (yes I know that you already replaced it once).

It is a brand new one from the pc-shop. It is a:

Hitachi TravelStar 80GB 6.3cm (2.5") PATA IDe

Produktdetails:

Allgemein :
Gerätetyp : Festplatte - intern
Breite : 7 cm
Tiefe : 10 cm
Höhe : 9.5 mm
Gewicht : 117 g

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Festplatte :
Formfaktor : 6.4 cm ( 2.5" )
Kapazität : 80 GB
Schnittstellen Typ : EIDE
Puffergröße : 8 MB
Produktzertifizierungen : S.M.A.R.T.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Leistung :
Übertragungsrate Laufwerk : 100 MBps (extern)
Positionierungszeit : 12 ms (Durchschnittlich)
Spur-zu-Spur-Positionierungszeit : 2 ms
Mittlere Wartezeit : 5.5 ms

The only differenceis that this one is an Eide(enhanced ide) and the old one was an Ide. I will use a progamme to test the hitachi. Installing several progammes like acronis true image, nero 7, SIW, Paragon partition manager, O&O defrag........... are no problem, even after restarting the notebook.

Used the drive fitness test(extended) from hitachi and no errors on the disk. Disk is 100% oke
post #17 of 41
^^ The specs look good - IDE, EIDE .. they are all PATA interface. I read what you are saying about installing and filling up the disk with no issue. But if your notebook was fine with the old drive - until it died - then another working drive should not cause the issue by drivers installation.

Unless of course something went wrong when installing the new drive, loose/pinched connection somewhere maybe?

I have checked the hdd connections and everything was oke, no bents or loose connections. I reinstalled XP pro again(i took this time a xp pro cd without SP1,SP2,SP3 on it). The same problems again. That was the end of my patience and i bought a usb wlan stick. I have installed the drivers and software from the cd that was with it and restarted the notebook. No problems this time and i could work with the notebook and the wlan was oke. The guy from the pc-shop does not understand it also. For the ati driver,i still have to find a solution even it is not necesarry because the notebook works fine and my screen image is fine and sharp(1024x768)

Maybe a bad WLAN (internal) card. ATI - might want to try out Omega Driver. Good to hear that at least it is running.
