D810 BSOD issues ATI x600 drivers

I am trying to resolve a Blue Screen issue with my son's D810. He has loaded Win 7 Ultimate on it and began having problems when he upgraded the memory. I used memtest to check the RAM one card at a time and did determine that one of the SODIMMS was reported as DDR1, not what it was supposed to be, DDR2. Even after taking out that SODIMM, the unit is still having issues

The issue seems to be focused on the Radeon X600 vid card. If he sets the machine for a std VGA it works fine. As soon as he sets up the x600 it crashes on boot.

Dell diagnostics found errors when attempting to read the hard drive but the SMART test passed.

I have seen a lot of threads on Win 7 driver issues and the lack of support for the older ATI cards, are there any newer vid cards, supported in Win 7, that can be retro fitted to the D810?

Thanks for any info

Try using Vista Drivers for the GPU

Also make sure you install the chipset drivers for the laptop even try using the Vista chipset drivers as Win 7 does not always do a good job with the Windows drivers

I presume you mean the Intel drivers for the 915 Mobile Express chipset?

Thanks.

Tried the Intel site, the only 915 Mobile Express drivers seemed to be for RST and RAID, neither of which applies to this box.

I did download and install the latest chipset drivers from Dell. I also updated the GPU BIOS with the latest from Dell.

I uninstalled the x600 driver that was crashing, then installed the Dell latest drivers. That gave mixed results.

Uninstalled the Dell drivers and tried the Hardware Heaven Modder on the 10.2 AMD Catalyst desktop drivers. It did not solve all my problems but at least the box is not crashing now. I get monocolor lime green horizontal lines dotted and dashed across the screen.

Will have to research what to do next

What happens if you plugged in an external display? Are the lime green lines going away?

Nope, external looks exactly like laptop lcd. That was my first thought, to confirm that it was not an LCD issue rather than a vid card issue.

Today will uninstall all current drivers, download ATI X600 laptop drivers for Vista and try that. Starting to wish I knew how to write drivers from scratch

Well . . . maybe not.

I have another D810, perhaps I'll swap drives and see if the problem exists in the 2nd box also. That would help confirm that it is a software issue rather than hardware

Bake the card

Yep,

Plugged the hard drive into another D810, checked the setup to be sure it was using the X600, no lines. Safe to say the GPU is dying.

Next questions is will an Nvida GO1400 fit in the D810 or do I have to find another ATI X600?

It has everything you need to know here

cheers ...
