Acer's tablet offensive is set to reach EU shores next month, as the company has scheduled April 8 as the day on which to release its first two Iconia Tab models, the W500 (runs Windows 7) and A500 (Android 3.0 aka Honeycomb).

Both tablets have a base price tag of £449 and pack a 10.1-inch (1280 x 800) LED-backlit touchscreen, but are based on different platforms - the W500 uses AMD's Brazos solution, while the A500 revolves around the Tegra 2 SoC (system-on-chip) from Nvidia.

The Iconia Tab W500 features a 1.0 GHz C-50 APU (with Radeon HD 6250 graphics), 2GB of RAM, a 32GB solid state drive, an SD card reader, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, a G-sensor, a HDMI output, a 3-cell battery and is pre-loaded with Windows 7 Home Premium. A 3G-equipped version of the W500 will cost £529. £529 is also the price tag of the WiFi-only W500 bundled with a keyboard dock (which includes an Ethernet port and dual USB 2.0 connectors). The 3G + WiFi W500, plus the keyboard dock, goes for £579.

The Honeycomb-flavored A500 has 1GB of RAM, 32GB of flash storage, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, Blueeooth, a rear-facing 5 megapixel camera, a front 2MP camera, 3G, a microSD card slot, a HDMI output, two USB ports, and a 3260 mAh battery.

Well I had the chance to play on both the Acer and the Motorola earlier today at Costco.

Acer won, hands down. Navigation and items (widgets) presentation are much better on the Acer. Touch is very responsive, menu intuitive. I had the feeling that Motorola put out the Xoom just for the heck of it, whereas Acer is being serious about introducing a tablet that can be somewhat competitive to the Apple iPad.

cheers ..

I hope I get a chance to play with them too because I'm choosing between them. But at least your review seems trustworthy so  guess I'll go with Acer too.

Costco, Staples ... they have the models on display side by side for tinkering. If you can go there and check them out first as well
